Is this jar contaminated?
    #18719619 - 08/17/13 04:43 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

When I first opened  the jar it smelled a little off.... Kinda like a sorta sour smell that you get when fruit goes bad in the fridge... I'm not really sure how else to describe it.

However once I scraped off the top layer of substrate the cake itself smells mushroomy
Just looks kinda messed up, what do you guys think?

Smell tells a lot, probably bacteria.

With bacteria, is there a chance that once it's present it can go away?

I'm rolling my other cakes tonight and have left that jar out of sight, would it be a good idea to wait for my other cakes to finish their flush before dunking this cake? I'm not sure if I should just throw it out.

Dunk separately from your other cakes, if you're sure there is no mold on this cake it might still fruit.
But the smell probably gives away that the contamination is worse than it looks.

If you don't trust it just toss/bury it.

I think I'll just buy some potting soil and break up the cake into that, see if anything comes of it. Thanks for the reply.
