Just thought I'd spread the word for all you WBS lovers out there... Depending on the Tek, there's controversy over whether or not you want to keep the black sunflower seeds in the mix.
One side says "Oh they have ligands which are great!/They're harmless/"A seed is a seed so long as it's properly hydrated/etc"
And the other side says "Get those goddamned things out of my mix! Skim them off! Do it! Do it Now!!!"
Well, a recent epiphany while reading a friend of a friend's past photo logs over the last several bulk grows: Whenever they had a blue mold contamination, the black sunflower seeds are always the first to be colonized by that cheeky invader.
I'd post the pics but it was a Friend of a friend, and there's no proof that they are not all pics from the same batch, and you all know very well what contam looks like anyways.
Anybody else notice this phenomenon? It was always a black seed first.. Which is why my friend's friend, will be skimming out those little bastards from now on or buying the all-Millet blends.
Just thought we'd pass that along! Cheers

I've noticed mold first on sun flower seeds before. It doesn't necessarily mean that is the only place it's growing at the time only that it is the most visible place. If mold gets into your spawn the jar is just as screwed with or without them.

mold spores are killed by the Pressure Cooking process. If you get contams on your grains, it's a bad culture or poor sterile procedures. Sunflower seeds don't cause contams.
