There are many yellow Amanita species. Some poisonous.
What we need is pictures of the cap/stem/bulb, and where in the world it was found.

I went back and picked some of them. can I dry them later or must they be dried now? they have dirt on them. do i just wipe them off with a moist towel? I read on this site to put them in the oven on its lowest setting for an hr.

I highly reccomend posting some pictures before you attempt to consume..
There are many yellow amanitas that look very similar and are difficult to tell the difference between. Many are poisonous.

It's really hard for me to say man. It looks close, but the marginate striations on the cap and petty annulus have me wary. Plus I've never found them. Maybe someone will help.

Try matching to A. flavorubescens. It looks like your stem is blushing, so it's probably around that group.

I agree is what I meant with the chimp I went out and found three more today (pics below) It seems like they are only in mixed forests with a few pines here and there. I searched numerous pine tree forests with nothing underneath them but pine needles.

Yessir poison Ivy. I used to catch it bad. now I catch it once a yr. then after that I seem to not catch it! 5 days of walking deer trails and trampling through bushes and I dont have it! I strip and take a shower right when I get home so that helps. I heard an old indian trick to eat a piece or chew on it and you wont catch it again. Im very skeptical bout that thought lol.

I've luckily never had it even once, my whole life I've been running around in it bare footed....no reaction. I've even rolled around in it when it was thick enough to resemble a bush multiple times.
I'm super glad about that too. I don't think I could handle plant allergies on top of all the bug bites I get. I think I would look like a crackhead scratching non-stop if it were all combined. Might even find a new hobby.
p.s. You need to dig up the bases every time, doing as little damage to the fungus as possible. The stem and bulb are crucial to A muscaria ID. You're putting in plenty of work, you're going to find it soon.

TY for the advice domesticgnome! Its cool you dont catch it I have a few friends like that. I get my share of bug bites too but not real bad around here. I even almost ate a spider with a yellow eggsack on it riding the quad earlier!!! I was like WTF is that?! I spit it out and was like OMG! big one too lol. anyhow yeah I been bustin but looking for fungus. I been focusing on the amanita species lately. theyre so cool looking! I was riding around looking for mixed forests to find them almost all day. even in my car now I stop and look under peoples trees lmao! So I should cut them off at the cap when I get them? I think you mean not to pull up the bulbs right? I been breaking them off mid stem and trying to leave the bulbs intact. also should the younger (round) ones be left to mature or are they just the same when harvested? thanx again for the help and encouragement!

Yeah, you got it. Make sure you dig up the base in tact We're looking for concentric rings around the base of the stem as well, so try not to damage the stem during the gathering process.

I really can't confidently say, man. Like I said I've never seen one, and would be surprised if I did where I live. Then the lack of stem and base doesn't assist my inexperience.

sorry about not pulling those all the way out. I was just worried after reading up more on the hunting forum that its best to cut them off with a knife becuse the mycelium reacts to growing better that way. So when I forgot my knife I just thought break em off half way and hopefully theyl come back next year. Its so hard at first to just appreciate their beauty and purpose, respect them without taking em out of the ground!

west Tenesee...Cool. I recently went to colorado over near nederland and boulder and amanitas were often found there. The original red ones. Thats how I learned what they look like and been researching them since. I watched a video about a study where they gave two guys amanita and recorded their actions. Th idea was to see if all the fuss about amanita and people dying was true or not. both guys survived. their trip started by falling asleep or laying down for a while. then they let them out in nature. they felt more connected, energettic and one of the guys who had a boom box outside was trying to explain how he could see the music coming from it. the vibrations etc. cool documentary! Have to look that up again right quick

So not digging up a foot around em is because they drop spores or because the mycelium spreads on the forest floor?

Those look pretty ominous to me man. From the fist pics, it looks like you found a couple different closely related species. Then there is the smoothed stemmed one that looks like it kill you . If I did have the balls to eat muscaria, for yellow capped varieties, I'd go with the regular yellow A. muscaria with the bright white slightly shaggy looking stem.
Some of those could definitely hurt you.
Those look cool though for sure

I went out again this morning and found a bunch of starts. Amazing how in just a couple days things change in the mushroom world! I cleared out around most of them and pick a couple premature ones. Does it matter if they are still round? I figure I will check on them tomorrow. think they will still be there? heres pics.

I think a couple of those look really close, but then look dead wrong(literally).
I'm gonna PM some people I think might have more experience with them and see if they won't swing by this thread. I really feel bad you haven't had much help.
Meanwhile, can you try for slightly better pictures? They've improved a heap and you're getting much closer. Try to get rid of the crazy angles and really bright lights. For example, when you're holding it straight up, your camera has trouble with focus and lighting. Once you dig it up, lay it down out of direct sunlight and try to get a picture with great focus.
Also it still looks like you're mixing in some "blushers" If you see a mushroom that bruises pinkish-reddish-brownish especially around the base, toss it. It won't be A. muscaria.
You're showing great improvement, bro. Keep your chin up. I know you're getting close. Just don't give up on mycology and move on once you find your todestools.

The following is excerpted from Don's book, " Amanita Muscaria; Herb of Immortality" from Chapter 11, "Natural Magic":
Natural Magic
The following material details how to find and prepare Amanita Muscaria for use as a sacrament.
It is up to the reader to exercise caution and restraint when first trying the Amanita Muscaria mushroom; individuals vary widely in their response to various substances. It is much better to have a lighter pleasant effect than to be overpowered. While I personally have never seen anyone experience a bad effect, there is always that possibility.
Our ancient fathers called it the herb of Life; let’s keep it that way. The Amanita Muscaria is Sacred; treat it and yourself with respect. To find and consume the Amanita Muscaria mushroom is to embark on a spiritual quest.
This knowledge is given so you may have the power of choice. If you wish to use the herb for healing, you can, if you wish to explore the Sacred, its here. The herb of Life is your birthright! No man, or assembly of men, has the right to deny you contact with the divine.
The Hunt
Finding the herb of Life is a sacred hunt, the Amanita Muscaria mushroom, as mentioned in Natural Science, is a Mycorhiza mushroom. It lives in a symbiotic relationship with various species of trees such as Pine, Spruce, Larch, Birch, Beech, Maple, Hemlock, Fir, Hazel, Olive, and occasionally, the Oaks. So, I don’t hunt the herb as much as the trees that support it. The Amanita Muscaria mushrooms will always be found in association with these trees, in the area encompassed by the tree roots. The herb also needs drainage; sandy soil or sloping terrain seems to be preferred.
Over most of North America the fungus fruits from June to November. In California and Florida it fruits in some areas in the winter, the only sure way to discover where the herb is to spend as much time on the hunting as you can afford during its season.
Once you have found the Amanita Muscaria mushrooms in a certain place, returning there to check from season to season is usually a good idea. Eventually you will compile a list of areas where you know the herb lives. It then becomes a matter of catching the fruiting. Do not be greedy, this plant is essential to the life of the forest; I always leave the older worm eaten and the very young buttons. The old ones don’t taste good but are still releasing spores while the very young buttons could easily be confused with a button of a different fungus. If all you find are young buttons; try to return in a day or two; they should be in their prime by then.
A prime specimen has a basically flat cap and is about its full size. It should be fresh looking and undamaged by insects, slugs or weathering. Rounded caps mean it is 1 to 3 days from maturity. Upturned edges on a cap mean it’s an older specimen; as long as they look fresh all three levels of maturity can be harvested.
A few simple items make harvesting easier. A basket to carry them in, lined with a clean cloth, a couple of small clean soft brushes to remove debris from the specimens and a flat blade screwdriver or an old stiff kitchen knife. Just slide the screwdriver or knife into the ground next to the specimen’s stem and pry up, it should just pop up whole.
It is a lot easier removing dirt and debris from the specimen before it starts to dry and the less dirt in the specimen basket the better, so I try to clean them thoroughly as I am harvesting with brushes and my fingers. Removing the stem from the cap at this time seems to result in less over all damage, as does segregating the caps from the stems in the basket since the caps are somewhat fragile.
Amanita Muscaria should be dried as soon as possible after harvest. Final cleaning of the herb should be done before drying. Sometimes a thin layer of soil is actually trapped in the skin of the stem’s butt. Gently scraping with a knife will remove it; a final cleaning can be done in this area after drying.
a basket of Amanita Muscaria mushrooms.
Preparing the Plant of Life
Once fresh specimens are obtained they must be dried before use! I remove the cap from the stem (if not already done) and slice the stem into quarters lengthwise the cap will dry whole. Placed on a screen or rack with good air movement they should dry in a day or two. If placed over a heating vent or oven dried, do not exceed 120 deg. F. A conventional food dehydrator with a temperature control works very well. Dry the Amanita Muscaria mushrooms until completely dry; it should be cracker dry, pieces should snap when bent. Once dry it should be placed in sealable plastic bags, sealing the dried herb of Life in the bags creates the most delectable fragrance, it’s no wonder the ancient Aryans also called it “Andhas” R.V. literally “the flower.” These bags can then be stored in glass or plastic containers; store in a dry cool dark area.
These dried Amanita Muscaria mushrooms should be aged for 2 or 3 months before using to allow a good curing of the specimens. Proper drying and curing is essential for both good taste and potency. The bread of Heaven can be simply eaten as is or used in the following preparations.
Dried Amanita Muscaria pieces being removed from the drier.
WARNING: Do not consume any carbonated beverage, (beer, soda, etc.) before or after consuming the dried Amanita Muscaria. It appears that Muscimol can be reconverted into Ibotenic Acid in the presence of carbonated water. This reverses the effects of drying where Ibotenic Acid loses CO2 and becomes Muscimol. The resulting effect being similar to fresh Amanita Muscaria ingestion nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, stupor, coma like sleep, excess salivation and no hallucinogenic effect!
Magic Food
In Soma: Divine mushroom of Immortality it is mentioned that the Siberian tribes using Amanita Muscaria often placed the dried mushroom into soups and stews thus creating magic food and this is one of the most enjoyable ways of consuming Amanita Muscaria. Crushed or powdered dried Amanita can easily be added to a bowl of stew, soup or oatmeal and actually makes the food taste better. This is probably the best way to begin using the Herb of Life.

Yeah, that's them. Hard to tell from the pics but I've seen enough of them to know they're it.

This is WRONG and can only lead to misidentification. It's good practice to leave all shrooms intact, then when printing separate caps and stems but arrange them so that there is no confusion about which cap came from which stem. If one print is off, you can confidently discard both parts of the off shroom.

I find that a small slightly stiff paintbrush or coffee brush is a good way to get rid of the bulk of the forest crut while leaving the mushroom undamaged, and as that article points out, it's much easier to clean it immediately and gently and keep most of that stuff out of your basket or whatever. I also carry along a couple quart yogurt containers with lids for messy/slimy segretation or to gather berries AND some pieces of clean thin cotton cloth. Wrapping some of the shrooms (like the dirtier ones) in a bit of cloth keeps them all cleaner and prevents rollin' around and damaging all of them. Gotta be thin stuff, tho', or you waste too much space and the weight of the cloth will contribute to crushing.
Yeh I'm a bit of a freak on the tidy factor, but I can see that I'm not the only one here who thinks that neatness counts.

definately going to have to pack a small stiff paintbrush and some yogurt containers. clean the shroom immediately. I like the thin cloth idea too! I often bounce around and break them on the atv. Youre definately not the only tidy person here

I know precisely that feeling of FINALLY finding a species you've been looking for after many hunts. I too have recently found my first yellow Amanitas. They run much smaller than the red-capped Amanita muscaria. I hope for your sake you find some of those! Their size and bold color are really special to behold. Keep those eyes peeled and congrats on your find!

The right mushroom on the second to last pic is Chlorophyllum rhacodes, or one of the 2 other very closely related and also edible species (They are all classed as 'Shaggy Parasol's.). I think deer are also a fan of Russula's.

It's worth looking up the species, it's one that disagrees with a small minority of people. It's also important to familiarise yourself with the Lepiota genus as it contains some deadly species, and they can bear some resemblance to the various edible Parasols.

Oh and even more importantly familiarise yourself with Chlorophyllum molybdites as it bears a very strong resemblance. It is poisonous. However it has green spores (instead of white). I'm not sure how you would go about telling one apart for sure that is in the stage of development that yours is in, other than that C. molybdites is a grassland species. Here in England it's easy as they don't occur here.

On another note/question. I dried most of them in the oven at 170 which is the lowest setting I have. They turned out nice and crispy like a cracker so I put them in a bag and stored them in the pantry. when I went to add to them the previous dried pieces were kinda bendy. is this normal? or do they need dried more. I had em in there for 4+hrs.

I'd watch out on that Chlorophyllum. Are you saying that C. molybdites doesn't grow in Europe? If so that's a good tidbit that I didn't know.

Hey I was wondering if anyone could help me identify these. They were found in northeast wisconsin, growing out of the ground, right at the base of pine trees. I am thinking maybe Amanita Muscaria. Any thoughts? Thanks.
