Suggestions on best method for outdoor greenhouse. On groundcloth and in ground.

So I have tried in the past using straw with a layer of composted manure on top for mostly moisture retention. I've also tried beds with straight straw, and plastic on top. All of these were above groundcloth. Didn't produce very well at all. Tended to stall out sooner than later. Initial colonization was alway very rapid and thick but didn't push out much yield. Going ahead I wonder what I can do different for better results. This is a large outdoor greenhouse. There are some area I hope to dig into the ground as I hear this makes quite a difference. However there are some areas just too rocky and laid with groundcloth that I need to keep an above ground bed. I initially didn't think that would make such a difference considering colonization time and thickness but never got great yield. It did get hot for a while so I wonder if heat was a factor. Any tips appreciated. Will in the ground beds really show that much more of a better outcome?

Dude... really? Straw doesn't produce for shit. Great colonizer, horrid fruiting. Why do you think most people use SOME straw in their poo? Zero nitrogen in straw dude, find a way to introduce organic nitrogen to your straw if you won't use poo or compost like you should be doing.

You should use something a bit dense when combined with straw, scrawled as a moisture resevoir as well as providing nutes. Coir, compost, poo, etc.

Noted. Any suggestions on a good way to mix it all in. I've tried before in a cooler but the composted manure just really stayed in clumps or fell to the bottom. Just wondering any better ideas

I dug a small trench directly in our clay laden soil about 8" deep. I lined the bottom with wet straw, then fresh manure. I dumped in my coir and grain and mixed more manure, topping it off with a nice thick layer of straw.
This was mid summer, a rather cool summer here, and in shade. It hasn't done jack shit. I think I GREATLY underestimated that clay's ability to hold moisture and drowned out my substrate with frequent watering.
Just to add to the "do not do" list

If it's too clumpy, it's too wet, or you don't have enough straw/coco. also, it's manure, so it will always be somewhat "clumpy". But the nutrients are still there.
