Their cds are materpieces. Each with a different flavor of brilliance.
The lyrical content of Lateralus is comparable to some of the best text one may read in search for spiritual comfort.

I'm going to play Lateralus for the students in my math class on Tuesday or Wednesday over the projector as an example of the Fibonacci sequence (I'm gonna play the youtube vid where they actually count the syllables). I don't actually have to teach the Fibonacci sequence in that class, I just wanted a reason to play some Tool.

You listen to Tool when you are apathetic with the way things are, atleast I feel that way when I listen to Tool. Though you are correct in stating that you feel a very spiritual vibration when listening to them. I remember I went to a Tool concert 3 years ago, before I went to London to study medicine. I had to cancel my plans I made to go out to lunch with my friend, and instead I chose to fly and see Tool live. When I got there I realized everyone around me was a tool fan and they were awaiting to celebrate the concert. Some were wearing t shirts which had Tool logos attached to them, I was one of the few that was wearing a Talking Heads t shirt opposed to the home shirt. The lead singer was acting strange, y'know how rock n roll singers can get a bit unsteady, may fall over in the middle of the act, or so it seems at first glance. Anyways he allowed some fans on stage as he performed his song, and we were more than glad to join him on stage. I felt so excited that I was near the lead singer of Tool and nearly cried. I suppressed that cry from leaving me, and instead I stood next to him and felt great. I agree that the lyrics seem to direct to your most deepest parts, and because of that I always listen to them before I'm going to trip, especially the song "Disposition?". I think that's the one I'm thinking of right now, its a great spiritual song to prepare you for your journey on psychedelics.

Tool is great, I have started liking them quite a bit. On behalf of the rest of the world, I urge you NOT to become one of the Tool fans who searches for hidden meanings/fibonacci sequence/clear illuminati references/areyoufuckingserious in every song/album/album cover/band member's t shirt. That gets so incredibly annoying. Tool fans discredit their band the same way the "bros" at a Dave Matthews Concert discredits theirs, and it really shouldn't be the case.
edit: inb4 "dude you don't understand. By the way did you know 9/11 was foreshadowed in Tool's first album???"

Yeah some fans will purposely be misled to believe that Tool are implementing hidden meanings behind what is originally saw up front. If you read the lyrics the first time and go back to look them over you won't find anything too subliminal, atleast I haven't seen anything that points to a conspiracy. Sometimes people will post announcements that Tool doesn't put hidden symbols into things without them, and because of that they earn the respect of everyone.

Yeah that's nonsense. Tool is pretty deep into occult-ish things. They did/do put hidden meanings in a bunch of songs. But that doesn't mean you can't take them at face value either. And that doesn't mean ALL their songs are like that.

I think it's cool that people try to find hidden meanings in the music and lyrics and videos.
For me it's more about pure sonic overload. I'm less concerned with the lyrical narrative than I am with the instrumental and vocal performance.

I'm all for the (to each his own) bit. But i'll never understand how tool could be considered as "just okay". I've always thought of em as the Pink Floyd of a new era. Endless depth and meaning in there, lyrically and musically.
