Miniature wargaming/roleplaying etc. in general, does anyone here do it?

I spoke to a local hobby shop, not just a miniatures shop like they used to have over here, but a general hobby shop, and it seems like the world of miniature wargaming etc. has changed a lot.
he says it's definitely down, but regardless of expense and things like that, I noticed more of it than when I was sort of toying with the idea.
I like regular craft store paints, and it's great to not have to mix colors because you can just get them all, and that is how I paint anyway, a lot of dry brushing with similar colors and what not, and can get whatever needed tools and stuff on the cheap.
I just really still seem to like the idea of it, painting stuff is what I liked the most but you sort of want stuff to be functional, I do enjoy picking my own models for whatever game and what not, but I suppose when I have the time and money I can meet a lot of people in this hobby with similar interests.
I noticed comic book stores merged a bit with these sorts of things, but I have no idea what the scene looks like now, but I wondered if anyone on here currently does it or has done it a lot, and what to look for.

Would have thought SOMEONE was into this at some point of their life
Sure it's expensive, but it's the only artsy thing I am good at (painting miniatures)

I was in Cincinnati one time and I ended up in one of those hobby shops that sell that type of stuff. It was full of some very "interesting characters". The store owner was wearing a kilt and showed me and my buddies some of his moves with his giant fuck off claymore sword.
So what exactly do you do in miniature wargaming? Are there like rules and stuff? Is it like Dungeons and Dragons? Please forgive me if I sound ignorant, I don't know anything about this kind of stuff, seems kinda neat though, albeit a bit nerdy.

Well, when I was a kid, I had toy soldiers... does that count?
Anyway, this is why we have video games like company of heroes and men of war these days.
Maybe not as artsy as physically setting up a battlefield, but hey, you're actually playing, right?

I intend to program video games but the fascination is still there with this and always has for people.
Basically yes Dungeons and Dragons is miniatures but that is typically pen and paper roleplaying and can be done many ways, often figures are bought and painted, there's crossover, etc.
In miniature wargaming there are tons and tons of games and rules sets, and I imagine some of the armies you can put together will work for a wide variety of games in their scale or can be scaled.
they range all over the place in complexity and cost for rules, from free to expensive, from user supported to fan based, etc.
It's painting miniatures and using them for fielding armies/skirmishes based on those miniatures and a set of rules.

I used to play Warhammer 40K. I enjoyed painting and customizing the models more than the gameplay, but it was fun doing battles with friends. The entire Citadel family of models is expensive as hell, which is why I no longer play.

I too cared more about painting and preparing miniatures , the wargaming aspect of it was secondary and gave me a reason to have them, but then again I never did all that, still do have some models tho.
I agree, I think Citadel has lost it's mind and there was even a video on youtube showing that there new business practices sucked and causing places to close down, and just don't make sense.
It just drives more people to look for alternative models, I think even 13 years ago I had the right idea, and if I want to play something that is so expensive anyway I might as well buy alternates, you get so much more, and they are fundamentally the same in a lot of cases, sometimes by intention design!
Plus it's sort of fun to scout miniatures and ignore Citadel altogether. There price increases and stupidity year after year is just making people quit, or adopt it less.
