That's not A.muscaria. Someone will probably chime in soon and get this down to species.

It looks like A. muscaria var. alba to me. What about it makes you say it's not?

i'm pretty sure it's supposed to have a ring on the cap that seperates the gills from the stem...and should have more cottony fibers maybe??

You may be on to something but according to Mushroom Expert that species is usually found in the northern part of the country from New York to Washington.

Yeah that's a pretty good point, and the lack of a ring bothers me but the bulb is very muscaria like. It's also supposed to grow in the woods? Maybe its some kind of lepidella but the key starts with spore dimensions so I've got nothing. I'm thinking less and less muscaria the more I look into it.

they are in the woods, my yard is way in the woods on top of crowleys ridge, if it wasn't mowed, it would turn into thick covered woods in one year.
i'm guessing the reason i have'nt found any muscaria around is the earliness of the season? Aug is usually drought level dry here, and hot. This year, with the stationary front that's been in the weather, it rained for weeks and temp.s were in 80's. and the mushrooms were everywhere and amazing. Yet no muscaria var. anywhere, which surprised me, since everything else seemed to pop. Maybe they're not here, but i have reports of sightings on web, maybe too early, as cooler weather and rains don't come here usually till end of sept. or sometimes oct./now.

I find the yellow version of muscaria in the fall. They are pretty common around here.

Amanita, yes. Muscaria, prolly not, eh?

"The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

This looks quite like A. muscaria var alba but could be an Amanita in section Lepidella. Check the spore to see if they're amyloid with tincture of iodine and a microscope.
It appears that there is some reddish staining on the stem. In this case that seems to point away from A. muscaria var alba and towards one of the Lepidellas.
