Yellow splotches in pearl oyster gills.
    #18717876 - 08/17/13 06:17 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I have some 10" alder logs that started popping their first small pearl oysters. But, there is something wrong with some of them... The younger mushrooms look nice and pearly, however... The older ones have these yellow splotches that look like they are degrading. It's really visible underneath the gills in places. They had not even gotten the full cup shape yet.

It's been kinda moist/drippy lately and I wandered up to check on some logs and there was mushrooms! Possibly they are damaged by the over humid/drippy conditions? Maybe I should put plastic covers over the stacks...

Temperatures were also pretty hot... 75F and drizzle!

I need to find a good guide on how to know when oysters are proper size for picking...

A picture would be cool.
Might be a bacterial infection with as wet as you say it has been in your area.

Here are your pictures. I'm not too concerned... Old chanterelles on the hill nearby have the same splotchy look. Ignore the slug eating. Logs are not in a fruiting location.

To me it just looks like a couple of them may be a little older than you think and starting to rot a little?  Other ones look fine!

I'm not sure what "cup shape" you're looking for - those look fully mature the way they are.  I'd eat all those except maybe that top left one in the first pic.

Have some medicinal mushrooms and want to get the most out of them?  Try this double extraction method.
