Do You Skim the Scum?

Here's something I've never seen in a TEK or FAQ or even mentioned here. When you boil your rye do you skim off the scum that floats to the top while boiling?
Same goes with WBS or other grains - I dunno about them because I've never messed with 'em.

I don't really get any scum on the top... I'd assume your just not rinsing well enough before you throw them into soak.
I'm anal as fuck about rinsing my wbs to get out all of the little rocks and stuff (though I leave in any corn, peanuts, and sunflower shells) I rinse a single quart at a time through the strainer in my yard before pouring into my pot and always have clear water when it fills and no scum when it cooks.

Nope - I rinse the hell out of my organic rye - until the hot water runs clear at least three times. I think it might be caused by the gypsum because it seems like I get more foam when I add more gypsum. But that may be my imagination. Just a WAG.

That would be my guess too.
If the scum you speak of looks like cum bubbles then yup. Hahaha

The scum is the gypsum...it contains sulfur so as the sulfur is released, it's basically making sulfuric fart bubbles.

I get "scum" on all my grain soak water, it's totally normal (even when rinsed properly).
Yes you can skim it off, but no it doesn't make a difference.
Part of me says there is certainly gypsum in the scum and part of me says there are also starches and such.
I've never seen a difference if I skim or don't. So I don't think it makes a difference

That's the same conundrum that inspired me to post this.
Part of me tells me there are starches and such and part of me tells me they might make the grain stick together. Since I now know it doesn't, I won't bother with skimming anymore - it's just another hassle that can be avoided.
Thanks loads for your advice. You really deserve the title of trusted cultivator.
