when you think about open air and SAB its really *almost* the same thing. in an SAB you're reducing the volume of space that can potentially contaminate your project.
i'd listen to everyone else... but just to throw my mix into the bowl, i treat my bathroom as a SAB. I put all my items in there (i use a tv-tray and a drumming throne as my main work area) and spray with lysol, close the bathroom door and as i'm doing it (slowly) i keep spraying as the gap in the door gets smaller. i make sure to get all the area i'll be using, from down low to up high.
i open/close doors very slowly, and i use excess amounts of alcohol on my hands/gloves and on my jars. if this is still considered open air (which of course it is) then its as close to jumping inside your SAB as it can get. I have had zero contamination in the past 20 jars/agar i've done.
i hope this helps you, as well as the input others have given.

No, you can do open air and have a higher fail rate. RR

I've only grown two batches of jars, and I live in a colder climate (less microbiology), but I had no contamination problems whatsoever (well, one glass, but I think that was caused by the mycelium refusing to continue spreading, for some reason), and I did not use a glove box or flow hood or anything.
I washed the glasses and the tub with soap.
I washed my hands with soap, and after they were dry, with alcohol. Always, before touching anything.
I put anything that I needed to store in a bag into a FRESH bag, one that has never been used, and I used flame sterilization on the syringe before every glass.
Results may vary, some seem to have infinite problems using this approach, some have none.
