Are my cacti getting spider mites? (contains new question )
    #18716254 - 08/16/13 08:16 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So I went to check on my San pedro's earlier and I have a rock propping it up because it started to lean.

I turned over the rock to re position it and I saw two tiny little red dots run out and disappear into the soil.

They are outside in Massachusetts and the weather is fair. It could just be general harmless insects or it could be an infestation waiting to happen.

What should I do? I'm at a loss here. Help?

Tetranychus urticae? These are all around my house. Your cactus should be fine unless there are large numbers of them, cacti are very resilient. Just keep an eye out.

If you're really intent on getting rid of them look up Diatomaceous earth It's a nice organic and environementally sound way to get rid of pests. Not to mention that you can eat the stuff if you get the food grade kind.

So seeing there is only two that I have seen, does that mean I should wait and see what happens or should I spray asap?

Is neem sold at hardware stores?

Just wait and keep an eye out, These are very common all over cement, rocks, etc. they were probably just residing on the rock you were using to prop the cactus up.

OK man. Thanks,I just panicked a little bit. Would they be safe to eat even if they do end up have mites?

How about after I use a pesticide?

I won't be eating them for another few years so one would think that shit would be gone before then, right?

Yes, might actually have a good nutrition too, there are to small though .
You dont loose anything to apply treatment, why not?

The most potent chemical, would be out of the cactus system in about 4 months, i think..

People seem to over complicate growing cacti, especially cacti that contain mescaline. Which ironically is an alkaloid that will take care of pests for you. That's why these cacti produce this alkaloid.

know your pesticides.
cacti are allergic to some of them.

neem , however, works like a champ.

There must be something wrong with my cacti as you can see from these pics bugs will destroy your cacti if not treated as soon as a problem is noticed. I could show you some pics of scale on Trich's as well but I think these pics are sad enough for one thread.

So I went to check on my cacti and there are white specs all over the top of one. I haven't noticed this before and my other specimen doesn't have them. Is that normal?

sounds like Cochineal. I gave you the solution for parasites: Diatomaceous earth.

I don't think its that. These off white specs can be picked off with a fingernail and there is nothing in them...they just crumble.

I looked it up earlier and I think it may be early stages of new growth tip pimples. I'm just not sure because those are supposed to be black not off white.

Re: Are my cacti getting spider mites? [Re: islanduniverse]
    #18725808 - 08/19/13 02:13 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Its mite damage.
Most of my collection that was inside under lights got hit. I had mealies first and was treating them but the damage was still getting worse. I then realised I had mites as well but it was to late and the damage was really bad. Most of my grafts got hammered which is a very diverse assortment of cacti.

One thing of note was they didn't hit the Trich's but I made them look like crap as well by spraying them with Natrasoap. The Natrasoap worked well on the mites and had no bad reactions on most of my cacti but the Trichs got covered in black blisters where they got hit by the spray.
I have also found that any Trichs that lived out side didn't have the bad reaction which I put down to them being healthier and having tougher skin due to being out in the sun.
Trich's don't seem to have as many issues with mites and mealies from what I have seen but they attract scale that can get out of hand very quickly if you don't get on top of it as soon as an infestation is noticed.

Growing in controlled environments is great for growing cacti but it is also the perfect environment for all sorts of bugs and they will rip through a small enclosed area very fast.

Cheers
Got

Use neem with caution.

Don't give plants direct sun on strong shade light when neem used on the skin will burn the cactus very bad.

I suggest if you use neem by using it as systemic way and if or when you apply it with spray of water to skin, make sure your plants are at very low light, keep your plants in shady room few days and apply neem when you see it's necessary. And important is to spray pure water directly to cactus skin before you put the plants back in the light so there is no residues of neem on skin.

..you don't want to fuck up like I have done. Picture is result of windowsill light and neem oil sprayed at night time.

Make sure you use it directly on very poor light and don't rush to get them back in to light before you have sprayed pure water to skin. In shady room neem doesn't fuck up your cactus skin. Also different species tolerate neem and light better but lophophora are very sensitive to this, also trichocereus can get sunburns from neem. I fucked up the lophs and few trichos by night time spraying directly but the still got damage at day time cause possible residues of neem on the skin of cactus.

I have succeed to get control of mites when I bottom water plants with neem on the water, it takes few months to see results but it will control mites at longer time period. Also it is possible kill bugs in the soil if there is some like mealybugs.

I have also like there up has said no problem with trichocereus.. Only mealybugs has been on trichos but they are easy to get rid of with chemicals but outdoor plants I don't suggest to use chemicals cause it will kill all natures good bugs too. I have still seen that lophophora and few others will attract mites and mealies easier than trichocereus.. Don't have seen mite damage on trichocereus skin ever but still lophs are getting the rusty look from them. Maybe trichocereus skin are so thick to mites? ...don't know but they are plants easy to grow and mites seems to like only lophophora and few other species of mine.. Ariocarpus doesn't seem to take visible damage even with neem directly on skin. I don't know for sure why mites are not attracted to go into trichocereus plants so easily than lophs.

..soon winter is coming and up there north mites comes always indoors, it's every winter problem and they will get indoors after first good day frosts what lasts about half of the year. Total winter when native outdoor plants is not growing are 7-8months long here and that time mites will get indoors every fking winter.

I agree about keeping plants out of direct sun while treating with neem, but if you are using it to treat mites you need to apply several times. The oil doesn't kill the eggs and their cycle is ~3 days. You should keep them out of direct sun for a week or 2, and not wash off between applications. Careful not to over apply or apply too thick. That can be bad.
I am talking about an infestation. I wouldn't bother with neem on my cacti otherwise.
I use a Spinosad based pesticide to keep things in check. Seems to work fine. That reminds me that it's about time to spray again.
Also, Once you have spider mites, you will always have spider mites.
