The local mill sells "winter rye" for dirt cheap, I'm wondering if this is the same thing as rye berries or is it closer to rye seed?

Winter rye is grass, such as used in lawns. You can use rye berries, wheat berries, whole oats, and most other whole grains.
Your avatar is amazing.

For what it's worth, I grabbed a bag today and it looks identical to my rye berries. Grain is the same size and even tastes the same. I put a spoon full of each next to each other and neither my wife or I could tell which was which. The guy at the mill said this is the same grain they make bread out of or top on cereal/salads. They assured me this was whole grain.
Glad you like the avatar, it's the black lotus from the MTG card.

I think I've stumbled upon one of those before. From what I could make out from reading the label on my bag, it's 'polished' whole rye berries or something like that.
Don't know if that's the thing you are in possession of.

Edit:
I've taken a pic of the two types of rye I have. The ones on the left is regular rye. The ones right is the 'polished' rye.

It's hard to tell them apart.

Also, that will work as spawn. Some stores mislabel their grains

Winter rye is what I use in my grain jars...it's perfectly suitable..I've even ground it and made flour for successful pf cakes. Now I just buy rye flour AND winter rye.
