Cakes turning blue PF Tek Shotgun FC (pics)
    #18715089 - 08/16/13 03:15 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I have 7 cakes now in my shotgun FC, followed RR Pf Tek to the T. Been in fruiting chamber for about 11 days now. Did the 24hr dunk and roll in dry verm then did good misting for the first day. Now I mist 4-5 times a day and fan 7-8. First pins came up on 6 cakes about 2 days ago, maybe 2-5 pins per cake. I'll try to upload pics. My main question cocerns the cakes turning light grey and blue on the tops where the myc grew thru the verm casing layer. The myc seems dense, solid, not fuzzy or rizomorphic. The first 6 days I had the humidity too low, maybe 80%, now that I covered some of the holes I got it up to 90%-95%. Temps fluctuate between 75-85. It's hot and dry here so that's the best I can do. So is the bluing normal, and does the thick, bumpy myc seem normal? Much apprecieation Shroomery

Still trying to upload pics. FYI the myc that came thru the top of the verm I can describe looks kind of like a lava rock, except ofcourse its white/light grey/blue hue. Very dense almost sold looking

Oh, also I didn't want to start a new thread about bluing myc, I have read thru dozens of the post concerning blue cakes, my concerns are with the texture of the myc, not sure what over saturation looks like, nor what dry myc looks like, or what cakes look like when the humidity is too high or too low. Hope this helps with getting some input until I figure out how to upload pics.

Mist more - it's (probably) a sign the cakes are drying out. A SGFC is a great design but can allow an awful lot of FAE which can dry out the cakes if you're not bang on the misting.

At first I thought it was due to over misting so I cut back on misting for a couple of days, then when I got my hydrometer and saw it was 75%-80% I then saturated the top verm case and heavily misted the permits to get the humidity back up. Because it has already began to pin and there are more signs of primordia, would it be ok to mist/fan pretty heavy without causing aborts. I think the inside of the cakes are still pretty hydrated bc they seem heavy and I did dunk em 24hrs. Lmk if I should mist much more often and how heavy. Only pins that are showing so far are on the tops of the cakes coming thru the 1/4 inch verm casing which is thickest at the top of the cake

I would, yes - a lot of people seem to say not to mist too heavily when pins are showing but I've absolutely soaked tubs down multiple times and not got aborts so it seems to work for me
