Bulk seems to be stalling...
    #18714952 - 08/16/13 02:31 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

This was a previous post I am talking about:

Hello,
I just took 3 fully colonized Golden Teachers 1 pint jars and followed the "let's grow mushrooms -on horse manure" video tek with a few variations. I pasteurized the Black Kow manure at 140 degrees for 1 hour then added 10 % verm and 5% gypsum. I then added water till it reached field capacity. I did not have any problems with the Black Kow that I have been reading about, people saying it turns very muddy, ect... I put a layer down then a layer of crumbled colonized rye and repeated three times in an aluminum foil tray about 12" x 10" x 3"  deep with the substrate on top about 1/2" thick. (There was more but it is not relevant to this post)

I know the key to all of this is patience... But I need some reassurance.. As explained in my first post I made a bulk substrate and covered it with aluminum foil, poked some holes and it is in my closet at 80-82 degrees. I "peeked" at it 3 days ago and was every excited because mycelium was starting to show up on the top (maybe about 5% white). So when I checked it today I was looking forward to seeing some progress and some more  white coverage. Instead it is just the same and has a mild/strong odor, not a bad odor just a new noticeable odor. I have two of the exact same substrate and strands going in two smaller bulk containers...more like 8"x 6"x 2" deep instead of the big one I'm worried about that has dimensions more like 12" x 10" x 3"  deep. The smaller containers are rocking about 20% covered and they are a couple days younger then the bigger bulk. So am I just being impatient or should I worry that no growth has occurred in the last 3 days? Why I am confused is because the smaller ones are the EXACT SAME substrate mixture, and strand.. They are doing great. Any ideas? Thanks

Do you have micropore tape over the holes you poked?

No sir.. I followed the "let's Grow Mushrooms!" video tek from Roger Rabbit and he didn't place any importance or mention micropore tape... What is the importance, gas exchange without cantams?

You should mix all your ingredients dry, then bring to field capacity & finally pasteurize.
That tray looks extremely dry.
Also, no reason to have foil on your colonizing jars.

Ya I learned that the hard way hope it doesn't destroy my yield. But I keep the aluminium on for labeling strain and date.

Just write your notes on the jars with permanent marker. It will come right off with a bit of rubbing alcohol. Half the time it comes off when I'm just washing the jars. The marker doesn't get absorbed into the glass like it does on other surfaces.

I use post-it notes or masking tape to label everything.

This post has gotten a little off topic.... Does anyone have anyone advice about the bulk substrate slowing down growth??

Let it do its thing.
If it doesn't colonize, I'd toss it in the garden.
