Waiting time before plugging logs?
    #18712799 - 08/16/13 02:00 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

I'm curious what your opinion on waiting time before plugging logs is. Some Oyster logs I just plugged at a week and a half standing time... The mycelium appears to have attached itself to the wood in two days. The plugs have fuzzed up, re-whitened, and merged with the wood already.

Is there any downside to plugging a wood like Alder immediately? The wood can't attack and kill the plug can it? These logs are spawn run indoors.

I'm going to do some testing... I will take a piece of green alder log, shave off the end and immediately... Place one plug in the center and wrap it in cling wrap with a rubber band. Keeping it at room temp I will note how long before the mycelium readily begins to spread across the face of the wood for Oyster and Shiitake.
How long to let logs age before plugging?

I heard some wood has anti-fungal properties and can fight off the mycelium, and so some people wait.

"Freshly-cut logs should not be immediately inoculated; trees naturally produce anti-fungal compounds, which degrade in two to three weeks from cutting. Aged deadwood is also not recommended for plugging, as it has a poor nutrient base for supporting mushroom growth." - fungi perfecti

I'm going to be on the search for logs soon, I'm hoping I can find a fallen tree and take some branches. I also heard you should try and get the logs in winter, when the sugar content is the highest.

Look around in the woods. You don't see oysters on live trees, right.  Trees, just like the rest of us have an immune system which fights off invading fungi and bacteria. It takes trees a while to loose this ability.  The time depends on the size of the log and the species.  Little alder logs might be capable of being spawned rather immediately.  Large oak logs might need a few months.

The reason logs should be harvested in the winter is not so much for the sugar as the bark integrity.  Trees cut in the summer will lose their bark much sooner.

On the other hand, you don't really wan to inoculate your logs until it is warm enough for the spawn to do something other that sit there. In my case, I can only access my alder before the winter rains, and I don;t want to inoculate until May on some years. The disadvantage to waiting this long is that the logs tend dehydrate and get infected by wild spoors before you get your spawn in them.

I cut my logs in early November, pressure wash off all the dirt, moss and lichen. Then I paint the end grain and store them under a loose tarp, stacked on railroad ties until it is warm enough to spawn. I remove the tarp every other day and give them a sprinkle to keep them wet. When it is time to spawn, I cut off the painted ends and inoculate.  Small logs I TIPI stack in wet sand with "hats" of sand that I water daily. Larger logs get set into post holes 20" deep, in a bed of sand, and are set up with a timed watering system to keep them wet.

Interesting... It looks like I will have to do testing on both my big leaf maple and alder... Both on the late fall logs and the late winter ones. The anti-fungal compounds might break down at different rates different times of year because of both the wood condition and temperature differences.

Oh, there are Oysters on some live trees, but the consensus is they are just eating dead wood. I am not so sure that is exactly right...
