Check out these pics someone sent me

My friend from amsterdamn e-mailed me these pictures. He asked me if I knew if the cakes were too close to gether, and what to do to get the mushrooms to grow UP. It looks like they are going towards the side. I told him that he probably needs to cut out a window on the top and shine the light through there. Is it too late for him to do that? Also, nothing has been harvested yet. Why do a couple of the cakes have a sheatload growing and the others don'? ALso, he said that on one cake there is a tiny area where it looks like little pins are already rotting, but he's not sure. Please check out the pics for him. That one mushroom where the veil is broken, would it be okay to go ahead and pick it? Or should I tell him to wait, and what would he be waiting for. Thanks again guys!

Yea tell him to use a non-clear terrarium and cut hole in the top of the container and put a clear peice of plastic ontop so light can shine through. They will grow upwards if he does this. Tell him to wait untill the veil is completely broken, and the cap opens up a little. Some cakes pin, and fruit faster than others

the shrooms look a lil waterlogged...tell him to put the cakes on top of the lids to seperate them from the perlite so they won't soak up so much water...and there's nothing wrong with a clear terrarium see...

I think you are right. He mentioned that he thought he may have too much water. ACtually, he knows he has too much water. Should he go about draining it out, or would just setting them on lids work? How does it look like the cakes are doing in genereal? He said it was his first grow and wasn't sure what to expect.

Your friend's cakes are doing just beautifully. IMO there's no need to drain the excess water, just placing the cakes on the jar lids will do the trick.

monkey liked those pictures. he wonders if those are your dutch friend's first crop, and if so he wants to pass on his best wishes.
monkey reckons that all is well, just those two cakes were ready sooner than the others. he says to go ahead and pick any ripe ones - hell, maybe even take a nibble.

Yes there are his first crop. he cut the cakes in half so he doesn't have enough lids. What else can he use so the mushrooms won't be water logged? THanks guys!

i've seen posts that say it is bad to set em directly on the perlite. but i don't see a problem with it. just pour out any excess water, so there's nothing to come out when you use a turkey baster or something (i assume you can't easily tip it).

A simple patch solution would be to cover the sides of the terrarium to stop light getting in.
As for setting directly on perlite, it might be better to wait until they are drying up flush-wise, that way when you do it you are rehydrating the cake. It might be unnecessarily risky having it ontop of a very dense environment all the time.

My friend sent me some more pics today. He was wondering if you all thought they were ready to harvest.

those are beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!! perlite is a pian! you should tell your friend if here can afford it to get some hydroton/leca/geolite/expanded clay pelets! those are all just different names for the same thing. they are much easier and more clean to work with, and you can put cakes directly on it!
check out the use of geolite in this thread if you haven't seen it already! tell your friend good luck and to enjoy the fruits of his labor!

Seems like most everyone uses perlite. I opted not to, mine are in a little styrofoam cooler on wire mesh and I spray 4-6 times a day. I wonder how much difference production-wise there is between using perlite and not using. Mine are doing fairly well, especially for my first crop.
