Chernobyl Radioactive Mushrooms
    #18709598 - 08/15/13 03:08 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I would follow the guideline when it came to identification request
but I saw these on a documentary (PBS: Radioactive Wolves) and they
are shown in Chernobyl.

The doc says the radiation came down and seeped into the soil so it
affected the plants.

Any ideas of what these are?

Most of those look like boletus edulis and probably are.

Not sure what they are.

Reminds me of the fungi that were found inside and around Chernobyl power plant that were found to convert gamma radiation into energy.

There called "Radiotrophic fungus"

Quite possibly. Mushrooms are fantastic hyperaccumulators. I always find Honey mushrooms cleaning up trashy areas of forests. I only eat them if I find them clearly away from trash. They actually seem to want to grow in areas with lots of heavy elements in the soil.

That's some really interesting stuff

I've been reading Mycellium running and it's got all sorts of good ideas for Mycoremediation, giving hope that we can reverse the ill effects of humanity.

Interesting article on Treating Fukushima with Mushrooms.
