amanita gemmata?

Found in North Central Maryland in mixed woods (old growth plot)about 6" high...there were several and they were all very powdery textured ...both caps and stalks. left a powder residue on hands .

Afraid not. Gemmata has a smooth stalk, and a cap some shade or tannish orange with warts.

Looks like Amanita farinosa. Powder-cap Amanita.

Thanks Hash...didn't look like the one shown in my guide. This stalk was much thicker than that described in guide.Also, the powder was very white...not grey/ brown.

Wow! That is it! Never knew that species but that is exactly what it is... I see these things everywhere! I thought they belonged in the rubescens grouping at one point also because there are the rubes with powdery caps too. Thanks for that ID. I learned something new today!

There was an article in the latest Fungi magazine about it.
It had some sensational title like "Is Global Warming Spreading this Deadly Fungus?"
Or something like that. It was really annoying actually.
