What rodent is this!?!?
    #18709009 - 08/15/13 12:50 PM (10 years, 7 months ago)

I have caught a picture of the critter that has been eating my canteloupe, munching on my carrots and devouring my tomatoes. Sorry about the quality, but this was taken by a deer hunting cam thing.

The current guess is a groundhog. Any suggestions or confirmations?

that there is a fine specimen of the common groundhog happily feeding in his preferred environment and not paying a damn bit of attention to that hav-a-hart trap--lol-----they eat mostly vegetables and you are going to have to bait that trap with something real good---like better than that cantaloupe--lol---good luck with that--lol

Groundhog probably. First i thought of a Nutria, but their fur is more coarse and wiry.

What that animal is depends mostly on your location. Looks like a nutria to me. Hard to tell without seeing the whole face and the tail. We have nutria and muskrat everywhere here in Texas. It's hard to tell them apart.

Beaver, Nutria, Groundhog, Muskrat.

This particular photo doesn't do much justice for the muskrat, which can sometimes be as large or larger than a nutria.

I'm glad we're not all you. Trap & release is an option, or enclose the garden grounds. We kill enough animals and cause enough endangerment to feed the masses. Share some with a little furry friend once in a while, can't kill everything.

trap and release is not an option if he wants any fruits of labor---that ghog will have ate out in less than 2 weeks---and those things got some teeth--go right thru chicken wire---they make a descent hide--check above post

That doesn't make sense.

I know all about loss to wildlife, deer are a HUGE problem where I live. They walk the streets of my neighborhood and give birth in my backyard. I know how frustrating it is. We just can't go around snuffin' everything we see in our gardens, don't we enjoy our gardens because it brings us peace and closer to nature? Right vs wrong is what it boils down to IMO. Perhaps i'm preaching to a brick wall, i'll shut up.

He can spend 4 cents on a round of .22 lr, or he can spend hundreds of $ and several dozen hours putting in a fence.  If the animal does go in the trap, he will need to drive it many miles away unless he wants it to come back the same day.  While this may seem like the more humane option, it is not.  He will inevitably drop it in another animal's territory and it will have to fight, come back to its old territory, or die trying.

Is this a fact? Sure killing something solves an issue real quick, we all know that. It just comes back to what you feel is right i suppose, while catching and releasing might be inconvenient for you, i'm sure the animal would appreciate (if he/she could) being relocated, rather than exterminated. At least be eating what you kill.

There are also groups that will come by free of charge and take trapped animals away, i used these people with raccoons i had trapped that were making my garage there home.

All i'm sayin is we should be thinking a bit before we decide to just blast every passerby. Our gardens aren't our lifelines anymore, we all still have our cabinets jam packed with food do we not?

If you know your area, you should know the animals you have as ''enemies'' and if you want to avoid killing them, you can do it very easily, without you ''running'' for supplies the last moment (that s dump).

Now, what will do to them and how to avoid them, is just personal matter, you want to spend few bucks and kill it, or you want to spend more and not kill it?

For me, paying some money for the sake of animals that i know they will come, is pretty easy.Spend some money on that and not buying a gun is a choice..!!
