Question about boiling sterilization

Hi all,
I read that it is possible when using BRF-verm substrate to simply steam sterilize jars instead of using a pressure cooker. I am obviously a bit afraid of contamination with this method. I read in a forum about a modified PF Tek where you can test out the sterilization success by boiling water as usual, and leaving the jars there with the lid on for a few days to see if any contamination occurs (without doing the inoculation!). Anyone try this? Also, if this works and there is no contam, should I re-sterilize or just inoculate from that point?
Also, I have 2 different strains and am wondering if it is a good idea to use only half of each spore syringe to make 10 jars total (5 of each) for my first time. If I mess up, I would like to have a bit of each strain left over. Just wondering if this is a bad idea in any way.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Right. I know it is okay and I have watched that video. Just wondering if I need to sterilize it again after leaving it for 2-3 days if I observe no contam.

Should work fine. As far as I know you can inoculate them after the wait (if the jars have been left untouched anyway) or steam them again, both should be fine. The latter is what I did.

It should work fine, but I can't see any major benefits to it. Seems the consensus here is that most "strains" have little to differentiate them, with select exceptions, so you might as well just pop one and save the other.

one for sure way to do it.. before I ever had a pressure cooker, was simply steam or boil them as your saying with inoculating holes open for an hour then let them sit at 120 for a day with your holes tapped shut...never had a prob with contamination's until third flush some times second.

The only thing you really have to worry about cakes sitting awhile before inoculation (provided you prepared them correctly) is moisture content. But people wait weeks sometimes and still have had success. Tape is unnecessary with pf tek because of the foil. Even after boiling, the dry verm layer will suffice. However, using micropore tape as an added precaution shouldn't do any harm, provided you aren't using really tall jars.
-------------------- “I think psychedelics play a major part in what we do, but having said that, I feel that if somebody's going to experiment with those things they really need to educate themselves about them. People just taking the chemicals and diving in without having any kind of preparation about what they're about to experience tend to have no frame of reference, so they're missing everything flying by and all these new perspectives. It's just a waste. They reach a little bit of spiritual enlightenment, but they end up going, 'Well, now I need that drug to get back there again.' The trick is to use the drugs once to get there, and maybe spend the next ten years trying to get back there without the drug.” - Maynard James Keenan
