Liberty cap? ID request
    #18707936 - 08/15/13 06:30 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Habitat:
Grass.

Gills:
Brown, gills close together

Stem:
50-70mm length, 2-3mm width, very pale brown, smooth, not hollow

Cap:
10mm diameter, beige to light brown, smooth and slimy when wet, conical

Spore print color:
Brown

Bruising:
Didn't check, they've dried now

Other information:

I live in Ireland, in a fairly elevated area in the country side. I noticed the mushrooms growing a few days back but the grass was long and dense so I decided to mow the lawn. It then rained the following day and night and I found about 10 of these standing clear among the grass.

Not a Liberty Cap, as psylosymonreturns says, looks like a Conocybe, I was thinking C. tenera, but I'm no expert...just to add that many Conocybe species are poisonous, including possibly both species mentioned in this thread, certainly C. tenera, possibly C. apala also

In Ireland and the UK, liberty caps generally don't appear until the temperature drops to around 10 degrees Celsius (even for a period of a couple of days), and following rainfall, so this year at this time of year with the warm temperatures currently, it would be unlikely to see them yet, I would have thought. They will likely appear first in more northerly counties, on upland areas (above 1000 feet say, north/east facing slopes), where the temperatures are lower

Agreed. Quite common in Ireland - it has a similar habitat to Psilocybe semilanceata so maybe check your spot in a month or so.

Also FYI, Psilocybes don't have that shade of brown gills/spore prints - it's more of a dark purple colour.
