Possible chanterelle?
    #18707590 - 08/15/13 02:29 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Went mushroom hunting the other day in a patch of woods around Suffolk, VA and found these growing under a sweetgum tree.

Tried to take a spore print, but came up with nothing after 24 hours.  Caps are yellow, concave, about an inch in diameter, gills yellow, attached, branching, slightly descending stalk. Stalk is white, solid, bruising yellow slowly, perhaps 3/4 inch long.  No discernible odor I could detect.  Woods were open, soil a bit sandy and covered with leaf litter with leaves from sweetgum, oak, carolina ash and some chokecherry and nut trees (likely pecan or walnut).

I'm thinking (hoping) chanterelle.  There were only two of them I could find, but if I'm right at least I know where to go in the future.

It's hard to tell from those little photos.

If they're true chanterelles, the "gills" should (usually) be fairly blunt, not the usual thin blade-like plates of tissue.

Also, true chanterelles should have a distinctly fruit-like odor, somewhat like dried apricots. Often, the odor will develop awhile after picking.

At least in my area, false chanterelles will always grow from wood, although the wood may be buried and concealed.

Happy mushrooming!

Yeah, I do apologize about the photos, but at the moment it's the only camera I have access to.  I will be getting a better one soon.  I would not have used the photos except that I got excited over the prospect of finally finding an edible I recognized, though not so excited that I just gulped 'em down.  I have no intention of succumbing to a bad case of roomus igloomus.

Thank you for your input.
