I'm not sure about the whole paper cat litter business. I thought about it myself, but rejected it on the following grounds:
1. I'm afraid that paper cat litter doesn't have the airy structure (especially when moist) needed to grow shrooms.
2. I suspect that in many kinds of paper cat litter fungicides could be present, inhibiting mycelium growth.
But, as the English say: the proof of the pudding is in the eating!

If one would spawn with pure mycelium, would Pcl fruit with no casing?

Apparently, mycelium thrives on it, so why not? If the mycelium grows properly, it's just a matter of providing the right conditions for it to fruit. So I'd say, go ahead!

BTW, how did you get by that ugly contam? Was the pcl sterilized properly?

I spawned some WBS to newspaper in a salsa container. It is pinning
now in a terrarium. Also spawned some WBS to some cardboard(the divider cardboard froma a case of mason jars)in a ziplock to make a
little log. It is fruiting.
