'High Times' challenges Ole Miss to marijuana potency competition

'High Times' challenges Ole Miss to marijuana potency competition

High Times, a publication for marijuana enthusiasts, reported this week that the University of Mississippi claims to have tested a strain of cannabis that registered 37 percent THC, or tetrahydracannabinol, the intoxicating chemical in marijuana.

That's a higher THC level than any they've tested.

The magazine got the information from CNN’s premiere of Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s documentary “Weed.” In it, Gupta “cuts through the smoke and travels around the world to uncover the highs and lows of cannabis.”

High Times said their lab tops out at 25.49 percent THC.

“No strain we’ve had tested ever came close to 30 percent THC,” High Times writer Danny Danko said. “So, we’d like to challenge the University of Mississippi to reveal the method and results of their testing (or at least tell us the name of the strain with 37 percent THC so that we can, um… further study it).”

The magazine also invited the university to enter their Seattle Cannabis Cup Sept. 7-8 to compete with other high potency strains.

A USA Today article last year reported that Ole Miss was selected in 1968 as the United States' first, and only, legal marijuana farm since the drug became illegal in 1937 under the Marijuana Tax Act.

The article said the Ole Miss team is working on a new method of administering THC with hopes that the new approach “will decrease some of the unwanted psychological effects and offer a safer way to attain the therapeutic effects of pot, without having to inhale smoke.”

Marijuana has been successfully used to treat patients who suffer from illnesses like glaucoma.

Ole Miss researchers say they are concerned about the unregulated market for marijuana. Without some type of regulation, people are subjected to dangerously high levels of THC.

I turned to my wife when they said that on TV and said "no way in fuck".

At the dispensary i work at, the highest test result was from our SFV OG which came in  at 24.09% THC and 0.26% CBD (check our menu for proof, its under hybrids http://sespecreekcollective.org/menu/ ) And that's the highest weve seen in 4 years.

That's nearly 40% THC claimed by the Uni, THC in its purest form is a crystalline solid, so the bud would be nearly as much hard sticky THC as plant matter, which would be fucking mental and not what they showed.

I'm really happy to see HT called out the university! :callingbullshit:

37% is too strong. I like to be able to have a session when I smoke, and that stuff isn't session material

the stuff around here probably tops out in the low 20s but that still gets me very high with just 2 hits. a lot of times i just smoke schwag lately

"Marijuana has been used to treat patients with illnesses like glaucoma"
I guess cancer is an "illness like glaucoma"

The only reason high times hasn't tested a strain with that much THC is because their a biased group of fuck's that favor breeders/grower's they can make a buck off of.

Some of the best strains Ive ever smoked, or even grown.. Not mentioned in high times and never will be.
