Chicken of the woods fruiting blocks indoors - Laetiporus sulphureus 3

Well I feel vindicated, now that my first wild clone has finally fruited! I followed the recipe in the recently published paper on indoor cultivation of Laetiporus sulphureus (here) almost exactly. I couldn't get triticale or any bran except wheat. I also did not follow the temp, humidity, or low inoculation rate used in the paper. The bags were partially sterilized in a drum because the gas ran out. 3B unicorn bags. They have been sitting in a warehouse from 65-90 degrees. Most of them contaminated but still colonized nearly 100%. about 3 weeks ago a few were injected through the filter with 300ml of cold distilled water. I checked em out today and found this and I am SOOOO EXCITED

AYEAYEAYE am glad I have a bag of spawn chillin in the fridge so I can give it a proper go now that I know it will fruit.

updated XMAS 2013
here some fruits I harvested a month or so ago. showing pretty normal fruit development. you can see the top and pores of both.

here's one of them prepared by Sean Brock or one of his minions. My god, DELICIOUS! Just like BBQ chicken breast, except better. Cooked in chicken fat and grilled over hickory. DAMN! I must say the moisture content, even before cooking, is higher than the wild parent specimen. I found that one dry and tough on the interior.

Next step is to get a strain that will fruit consistently. This one fruited 2/100 bags. I have about 2 dozen plates inoculated from 3 separate fruits. I have high hopes for the plates inoculated from fruits collected off a living oak.

The way I understand it, that's not an easy feat to pull off. Well done sir.

Wow, that's really nice!
Conventional methods (plug a log & bury) can take up to 3 years to fruit. How long did this take using these methods?

i have june 7 written as inoculation date. so at least two months. but these are far from ideal conditions... The paper cited above says I think between 30-45 days from inoculation to fruiting. But they only used about 20g spawn per bag.

I have many people at the market asking for these beauties. Looking good man, may have to track down a culture and try this myself.

Those are some nice fruit bodies for this species! Do you know what strain you are using?

Hi there,
Aloha Medicinals has some of the best cultures on the market for L. s. (at reasonable prices for how well they work). You can easily get four large flushes from any of our strains that also happen to competitively thrive against contaminants. My personal favorite strain is L.s Frank as the fruit bodies have the most amazing coloration, but the strains AM2 and Tern have really high BE in the first couple of flushes. You can check out more strains at the website in my signature, and if you guys have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

It was my first wild clone, the 'parent' in my avatar. Part of it was harvested from a local (mostly) old-growth forest. Perhaps a trade we can make...

Good work Drake!
I'm looking forward to your reviews on the taste of these guys. I appreciate when cultivators give an honest try at growing the odd ball or hard to grow species. Thanks for sharing.

Drake,
That is a magnificent specimen! Unfortunately Aloha already has quite a few strains of this species, so it will not be as easy or as valuable a trade as a species Aloha does not already have, but it could happen (it is not my decision to make). If you are still interested in a trade send me a PM and we can get into more details.

Great work definitely keep us informed. may I ask what was in your casing besides the sawdust, reason I ask I found a laetiporus in the woods myself and took a sample to do this very thing.

No casing, they fruit through the filter patch, the larger 'b' variety, I think 5 micron pores. I think since the blocks are so rich, 40% supplements 60% sawdust, that they are very prone to trich. I was throwing the blocks out today and noticed what seemed like an invitro fruit. Very dense fist sized blob on top in the bag. Weird.
Oh, I think I forgot to mention that I got two more 'pins' to pop out. I say pins because the fruits never got much bigger than a child's hand size or so. Reckon it was too dry. Once the pins popped thru the filter patch, they grew pretty exponentially as is kind of typical of shrooms in general. Did I mention they taste uncannily of chicken? I kind of want to do a test run with people because I know a couple of people that they cause stomach upset in.
