DrinkSavvy launches date-rape-drug-detecting glassware

DrinkSavvy is launching color changing glassware to detect if a drink has been spiked with three common date-rape drugs.
In an effort to reduce drug-facilitated sexual assault, DrinkSavvy founder Mike Abramson teamed up with chemistry professor John MacDonald at Worcester Polytechnic institute in Massachusetts to develop a line of 16-ounce cups and straws that change colors when in contact with common 'date rape' drugs like ketamine, Rohypnol and GHB.
DrinkSavvy straws turn red when spiked with common date rape drugs like GHB, Rophypnol and ketamine.
Abramson decided to create the glassware line after he was affected by the date-rape drugs himself.
"Within the past three years, three of my close friends, and myself have been unwitting victims of consuming an odorless, colorless and tasteless drug slipped into our drink," Abramson wrote the Daily News in an email. "That is why it is our goal to have as many bars and clubs as possible to simply swap out their current drinkware for DrinkSavvy drinkware, making it the new safety standard."
DrinkSavvy products will be avaiable to the public in early to mid 2014.
Here's how it works: If the beverage is safe to sip, the cup will remain in its clear state, but if the drink is spiked, red stripes will appear on the cup. The DrinkSavvy straw will operate the same way.
"They're discrete, because they look and function just like any other cup, straw, stirrer or glass," Abramson said of the drinkware that has already raised over $52,000 from nearly 2,6000 individual contributors on the crowd funding website Indiegogo.
The DrinkSavvy glassware is slated to launch for free in select rape crisis centers this September and will be introduced to the public by early to mid-2014.

I think these glasses are a good idea, especially the straws which women could carry in their purses easily. I doubt bars are going to invest in a whole new set of glassware when they have perfectly good glasses already, but the straws are great.
However, I absolutely do not believe what he says about him and his friends being slipped drugs. Maybe it would happen in a gay bar, but I really doubt many people are out there slipping roofies to dudes. Plus, just by the nature of the drugs, how would him and his friends know for sure? And did they get raped or robbed? I don't think so because then he would be saying "my friends got raped/robbed because of this problem" not "oh we were given spiked drinks, trust me."

The cups are made of disposable polystyrene. Theoretically, they should be really cheap. All the bar has to do is charge a bit more for the cup per drink.

Ive always wanted someone to slip me something, or lace my weed... It would be awesome, free drugs. It'd be especially funny to say "was that flunitrazepam or some other benzo? Thanks either way".
Cool story tho, thats good shit.

Yeah, roofies don't dissolve in drinks anyway unless they're pure alcohol, GBH has a taste/odor distinct from alcohol, and ketamine does as well. It's not impossible that people have been slipped these drugs before unknowingly and it's almost certainly happened more than once...but alcohol is the best, least suspicious, most easily available date rape drug there is. If someone claims they've been drugged, unless there's other evidence the odds are they just had too much to drink. Now we'll be able to know for sure though!

Since that one chick got raped when she was unknowingly dosed with ketamine.

It absolutely happens all the time. All. The. Time.
And sorry to burst everyone's free drug bubble, but you never want to be slipped anything. An unknown dose of an unknown substance ontop of whatever you have already consumed just spells trouble. Often face planting blackouts and vomiting hangovers.

i have a male friend who was slipped some kind of drug at a bar once when he was in college. he remembers going into the bar and having one drink before getting really fucked up and blacking out. he woke up the next day at his parents house (he was at a bar across the street from his dorm about half an hour away and figures someone just put him in a cab and told them to go to the address on his license) with all of his money and i think his cell phone missing. whoever drugged him made off with like 500 bucks cause he had just sold a bunch of weed on his way out.

You and I are of a like mind. Alcohol truly is the best date rape drug ever invented, simply by sheer numbers. It can produce extremely marked disinhibtion and result in amnesia as severe as benzodiazepines or head trauma, and the intended victim is usually accustomed to voluntarily ingesting it already. It can easily result in someone completely losing control while under the influence of another. Barring urine metabolite testing, and based on the amnestic nature of all of these drugs, including alcohol, I don't think in most situations a case can be made that anything beyond alcohol was used. I think individuals are not familiar with some of the more extreme effects of rapid alcohol ingestion and assume an additional substance must have been used with nefarious intent and premeditation. Raping or takind advantage of a drunk woman is just as bad as raping or taking advantage of a drugged one, and deserves equally severe punishment. So please don't misunderstand the point I am arguing.

Universities should give these to frats for free and require them to use them at the parties.
