I've read some reports that suggest kava almost certainly causes severe liver damage. Does anyone have any experience of this, or is it just dramatic FDA bullshit?

Kava root is what I buy. I read somewhere that root does not cause any harm but other parts of the plant may.
Now to me, this doesn't make any sense because I'll all has the same active ingredient in it...at least it should from what I understand.
Now this is just what I've read, you have to take everything you read or hear about new "drugs" with a grain of salt.
Me,personally my liver functions fine. Everything in moderation though, right?

From what I understand, the tops and leaves of the kava plant may be potentially toxic to the liver and may or may not be included in some store brand supplements. Buying the whole root is ideal, but I've used store bought and gel caped kava kava at the health food store and it wasn't bad. It's like you're sleepy. I think it may help someone with anxiety. I tried mixing it with kratom and threw up all afternoon.

I've been drinking kava for a long time (probably over 200 times in the last 14 years) and have not experienced any side effects so far. There was a German study a while back that caused uproar when they concluded that it does harm to your liver, but word on the street was that it was more a means to block export of kava there for some reason or another. The only long-term effect from habitual (ie. daily) kava drinkers (other than laziness) is dry, scaly skin.
If you can get it, buy the real stuff - I just bought this a couple hours ago:
(sorry for the shitty photo quality)
Kava in Fiji is really weak and watery; kava in Solomon Islands is good; Kava (called Sakau) in Micronesia is totally different (mixed with hibiscus - very slimy) and very good, but the best stuff is from Vanuatu - especially the island of Tanna. In the pic above is also something called a "kava bullet" which I've never tried (or even seen) before.
Consume kava over an extended period in a quiet, dark, relaxed place for best results. If you want to listen to music, reggae is best.

-- Ok here is the story on Kava:
Kava has been used extensively by pacific ocean cultures for thousands of years without serious health side effects beyond occasional skin rash. The problem only occured when western pharmaceutical companies looking to cash in on kava bought up large amounts of kava and turned it in to supplement pills, without realizing that only the Root of the Kava can be used. They included leaves and stems and bark in the pills that contained hepatoxic liver killing chemicals. This resulted in some people getting sick, and ever since people have had the impression that kava kills the liver, when in fact properly produced Kava (using a water, not alcohol extraction of the root only) seems quite safe in moderation, as long as it is not mixed with alcohol or certain other drugs.
Properly prepared the only side effect from kava should be a skin rash, and that is transient and only occurs in heavy use.
Conversely, several studies now demonstrate the potential medicinal benefits of kava, including several applications in the treatment of cancer and possibly alzheimers. Paradise Kava has a compilation of these studies on their website. --

Not sure about what he says about using water and not alcohol.
