New hunters, remember to make a checklist with specific ID points when you go out. Rip apart the stems to feel texture, try to remove the pellicle and check the gills. This helped me as a new hunter last year.

Also, NEVER eat anything you have doubt about; take some good pictures of gills, caps, stems etc and upload here. I have seen too many idiots eating S. Semiglobata srsly -_-

And so again this year we are experiencing a late bit of sun, of course this will hold back the season for a while, just when you think its on it goes off. Anyway I just thought I'd post as no one else has for 2 days, rain this weekend up here near the Peaks so using all my skills & experience from the last 25 yrs I'd put a bet on saying its going to be mushroom season after that. Mushroom season as in full swing, I feel I have to add cos as we know there will be little pockets of them hiding in microclimates dotted around.

Might have a look early next week, but temps for the weekend are still pretty high, looking at an average night-time temps of 12°C near me for Sat-Sun, and around 13-14°C (night-time) this week.

What sort of temps are we waiting for? I heard around as low as 5 at night and 12 at day, that about right?

You're not supposed to talk about the weather on here. It's against the rules for some reason. You can get told off by a mod - be careful!

The UK threads always seem a bit more relaxed about talking about weather than other threads I've looked at. Maybe it's because it's pretty much impossible to stop British people talking about the weather.
Managed to take a quick look yesterday in a high altitude spot (500 metres) that produces early most years. In spite of the soil being much drier than is ideal found 20 caps in 20 minutes. In my local woodland I'm finding decent numbers of boletes, chanterelles and I've got my eye on a cauliflower fungus that started to come up over night. Things are looking up

Ah sorry, I didn't think that asking for a general temperature would be against the rules as it isn't like I was telling everybody the weather and where I am. Thanks for pointing that out!

It's grand to ask for hunting information such as temperature ranges (btw 5c to 15c is a good rough target) but if everyone is on talking about the weather then u end up with a 100 page thread filled with nothing but, "Gonna rain 2moro". It makes the interesting stuff a lot harder to find. Personally i check this thread for hunting tips, an indicator that it's season and to cream over photos of lovely libs. Knowing the weather for X region of the UK is irrelevant.
Makes sense to keep the thread on topic and focus on the actual shroom hunting and identification.
Get more photos up guys cos i'm yet to find a lib this year, only other species

Ah sorry, didn't know that, thanks for the heads up. Will refrain from posting those details in future.Quote:

Ah ok no worries, I was about to post but then I read your reply. Will keep any observations about my local weather off this thread, and talk to strangers on the bus about it like any normal (British) person instead

Don't apologise to me. I don't care either way. I was sort of half joking. There usually is a lot of weather/temperature talk in the UK thread and I don't think people/mods really mind - but it is against the rules. No worries
Anyways... It's still too dang dry and warm 'round here - when's it meant rain next?

Ok so I am brand new to mushroom hunting and it appears the mistakes are strong with this one. I stupidly kept all the mushrooms in pockets that I thought would prevent them from getting bruised and I am charging my camera at the moment so all of my pictures are via my phone. I also didn't take my phone with me so I had to take pictures after I picked them.
I will be going out again tomorrow after it rains tonight so I will improve my strategies for tomorrow. I know I need help identifying mushrooms so I will try my absolute best to make it 10000 times easier for you pro mushroom hunters to help a noob out.
All help and tips are appreciated thanks guys
Group A:

Group B:

Nevermind guys I have figure that they are not libs.
1) Lack of a separable gelatinous pellicle. 2) The lack of a distinct "nipple" on the cap
I would say these are 100% not libs. I'll just have to keep on trucking. Maybe 1 day I will find 1

I can see no libs here. Keep looking! Which part of UK are you in? Looks like you have some indicator species there.

These look nothing like the American Pekin Duck!!! Looked at picture again and nearly died of laughter :P
I forgot those were there
@DrDelban I am in the general area of Stirlingshire, Scotland. I know the rules are funny here about saying exact locations so I am keeping it as vague as possible. I will keep an eye on that spot if those are good indicator species. About to get some lunch and head out again. Wish me luck

Dude, I understand, even if you just said Scotland I would be satisfied. I don't need to know your street address LOL

It's too god damn warm where I'm from for libs . Seriously it's been warmer this whole week than it had been for most of the days of August and because of that libs aren't growing .
Although on slightly different note I did unintentionally run into a couple of Amanita Muscaria mushrooms earlier today at a park which in it's own way was pretty cool. Although sadly I don't know too much about them (when it comes to toxicity, dose, etc) so I think I'll just leave them be and not bother eating them . Still, I think it was a cool find
