I am by no means a beginner now and have managed to find approx 800 libs or so this year, which should be enough to last me the year. However, I have always found them up on the moorlands throughout various parts of the yorkshire pennines and north york moors and have developed a kind of sense as to where they will be.
However, I was wondering, as I keep reading about how people have found them growing in normal fields, and not moorlands, how people know to spot accessible fields and not private lands. I know exactly what to look for for the kind of fields to look in its just, I see some potential spots on google maps, go and have a look and not really know whether I am allowed into the field or not. I want to find some decent fields as I think the right field could yield a more concentrated fruiting. How much freedom do we have with the 'right to roam' law?
I am not a seasoned walker and I am certainly as cautious as I can be whilst out picking and I think venturing into private land would be "pushing my luck" a bit!
Any tips? (I am not asking for spots, just good advice whilst out to know which fields are accessible.
thanks guys

The other option is to do it the old fashion way. Buy an OS map and go for a walk along the footpaths! Won't show you the difference between agricultural land and pastures but you'll have a nice walk along the way

Just been out this morning and there were loads! This is very high up on the hills of middle england too. Getting colder and very windy but way more than I saw last time I was there a few weeks ago. Got about 200 I reckon.
I think it might have something to do with the fact I did a little ceremony last night, tried three dried ones in a Damiana tea beforehand and I could definitely feel it! From three!! So I very much felt the spirit of the mushroom with me today, it was quite effortless. They just kept appearing for me
Happy hunting everyone!

so guys i had my first ever hunt today and got what i thought were some good specimens. unfortunately i don't have any pics of what i actually picked as my camera is messing up. anyway after getting home i am now unsure of my loot. they do not seem to have a nipple top but more of a general point to them. and the gills were more of a grey brown. They were almost this shape. http://mermaidspurse.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/tiny-mushroom-e1332563509151.jpg
Also while in my garden today i found what looks suspiciously like a lib, nipple and all, but the head seems to be rounder than i have seen in pics. any thoughts on this.

It really depends on your location. I've found some fields in the last week that have only just started to fruit, so personally I think there's still time

Hi Guys,
Sorry to be a bit new to this, but I picked these up in the Peak District this week... Was wondering if you could tell me what they are? They were all picked on grassy hills with sheep roaming them.
These are only a few of the ones I got today. The rest I've dried... Two species here, I think... The three in the top left corner are the only ones I grabbed of those. The rest are all the same species (I think!):

Here are the mushrooms I've dried...

I'm a bit worried that I've picked a bunch that are similar looking, but perhaps not what I'm after.
I don't know, could someone advise? Thanks very much!

Top left looks like Panaeolus fimicola, but really the shot is too blurry to say, and the rest Mycena, probably.

Ok, cool - thanks Jole.
...Can I eat these? And will they, uh... Alter the doors of perception, so to speak?

unfortunately no...they're not psychoactive so you'll have to bin em...keep looking though..have a scroll back over all the pages of this thread and get more accustomed to the libs and to the usually misidentified types... you'll feel more confident in picking the right ones then.

Open Street Map For quick reference you can use this website alongside Google maps (open in another web browser tab) to see if your potential spots have public access (dotted lines are footpaths) Note the layers' tab at the side to change map interface, I find 'open cycle path' best as it has footpaths & contour lines
Viewranger Much the same as above but easier to toggle between google maps/open street map as they are all in one interface You have to setup a free account and can also download a free app onto your phone which is great to see where you've been/where your going... you can even set markers for newly found spots, you just need a smartphone with GPS, if it wasn't for this app id've been lost long ago! For planning ahead/checking for public access, you log in to the site then go to 'my view ranger' then 'create a route from scratch' then you can toggle between google maps/satellite images/maps with footpaths (be sure to make the map full screen for best effect)
Wheres The Path? This one is also quite good also although I still use Viewranger as I prefer whole screen not half/half
Thanks for the info! , and everyone else.
Followed this advice and came across a really good field. Only got about 80 or so but I guess its approaching the end of the season now and i'll remember it for next season!

Yeah, although it appears the peak has somewhat passed for most spots the season is far from over
I'd also recommend looking a bit closer to home, I used to drive all over the place looking for spots spending loads on petrol as i was usually driving an hour out of the city, I've been on some amazing treks in beautiful places but i eventually found the best field ever about 15 minutes from my sisters house
