UK Liberty Cap 2013 Official Thread
    #18698454 - 08/13/13 03:35 AM (10 years, 7 months ago)

Psilocybe Semilanceata/Liberty Caps

A friend of mine picked this mushroom this morning, she is convinced it was a lib, I was convinced it wasn't... there are pic's further down the thread which I feel confirm the season has officially begun!

Props to merlinthemagician

The first set of pics...

If you are thinking of picking Psilocybe Semilanceata but don't know what to look for

I'll never live this down if you're right!

I was convinced it's not a lib and she thinks is a baby one, but with that length stem?

Libs can come with much longer stem, even babies, so it's not factor. Also not all libs have distinguishable nipple.

I don't think it is. Looks like a panoleous, but I'm not an expert by far. Don't give her £100!!

I said I think it is, due to the cap color and shape typical for young
specimens, also the stem looks promising.

However it is hard to be certain without more information or better pictures.

Did you actually see and touch this mushroom, or have you only seen it
in these pictures? Of course, if you already handled it personally I'd trust
your conviction.

If it is not too long since it was picked, could you ask her to take new
pictures of it? It would show wether the cap is hygrophanous or not.

Would you bet your 'trusted identifier' badge on it?

Hardly.

Quote:

I don't mean to be rude but I also recall you mis-idientifying UK libs in last years thread, please don't take it personally, but I do remember you identifying one guys find as libs when everyone else said they weren't

Crikey! Do you keep a file on me?

Kudos for your good memory, though.

looks like some psilocybe, not necessarily semilanceata. see how the colour changes when it dries. maybe you were a bit too rough when checking pellicle?

also, pics of gills are always appreciated . and spore print of course.

(i suck at identifying anyway)

I think I would have left it if I was picking but I'm also no expert. So can this warrent being the start of the official UK thread then?

I would like to see a closer clearer picture of the cap, and of the gills.
Everything looks promising for liberty cap but the margin of picture four. I would say, no... unless i see more pictures.

It looks dubious, I agree.

If OP's friend put 100 quid on the table I'd say she'd better back up her claims, that's for sure.

However I'm starting to doubt that, this specimen is probably already more than halfway dried.

I have seen many a lib in it's early stages looking like this, pretty sure it's a lib.

Cut it in half neatly and see if there is a white dot in the middle of the stem.

Looking good!

Season started in Norway couple of weeks back yet I guess we need some more
finds from the other Nordic countries first to start an official thread.

i wasnt trying to be a douche, sorry the whole thing was douchey...

a lot of species have the stuffed pith. i just dont want anyone going out there and eating an inocybe that growing in their lawn because it looked like a young lib and had a stuffed pith...
