I need to know what the cheapest $$$ per square foot style of construction is.

I'm looking for a design that can be built by an amature, is about 200-300 square feet, and costs less than $2,000 to build. Anything more than that and you might as well just get a used trailer.

About $2,000 you say? I could sell you some pallets that you could nail together. What happened? Did you get in a fight with your parents about taking the garbage out?

Research naturual building.....you can make a hay-bail/plaster construction. Don't worry about the other comments....i appriciate that someone like yourself isnt interested in a giant house somewhere. I too plan on builing a little shack in some of my creek front land someday. "Live simple, so others can simply live"

It's not for me. It's for my cult I'm starting.
Actually, I'm trying to design $50 a month housing targeted at college students and hippies. I can get land for about $7,000 an acre. If I can fit 12 people on an acre that's $583 per 3,333 sq. ft. lot.
My target is $5,000 per residence, and by residence I mean a place to crap and a place to sleep. I may centrallize the bathrooms into one building. Meaning there may not be any running water at all in the individual units.
I sell them the lot, and give them the plans, and they build a wooden tent that is up to codes. I would like for them to have electricity.

Thanks. Straw bale houses are only cheap if you can get free straw. They are mostly built by farmers in drier climates.

Hippies will like this.....search the web for how to build sawdust composting toilets....cheap and effective with no stink, you just need some barrles to keep it in once the "toilets" fill. Make sure to leave some land for a public garden....hippies like gardens, like me, i am a hippie and i love gardens. And they can use their humanure to grow their own veggies. Sounds like you got a little capitalized commune going on. HAHA. Well best of luck.

A freind of mine had a composting toilet. Some company came out and sucked all the dookie out once or twice a year.
It stank, and it was NOT something you would want to look to closely at while you were tripping because the pile of turds would start squirming. The biggest drawback was that you had to wrap your TP up in some more TP and put it in the garbage. Result: garbage bags full of used toilet paper.
Yeah, I think I'd like to avoid that if at all possible, but I deffinitely won't rule that out. Especially if the land doesn't perk for 12 people.

I have a active sawdust toilet. YOu keep a little bag of sawdust near by the bucket toilet....when you crap and piss....you throw a handful of sawdust to cover it.....like a kitty litter box....you can even throw in some *SAND* kitty litter time to time if it does infact smell a little. Its actually quite popular to keep 3rd world countries more sanitary and provides good fert. for agriculture. When it gets full you take the bucket part of the toilet out and dump it in the 55gallon drum. Clean the bucket and let it air dry, while you put a fresh one in the toilet box.

Build into the side of a hill. Dig into the side some so you only have to make a real roof and a real front. The inner walls and floor can be next to nothing. Or actually nothing. At this level you should eliminate running water. Have an outhouse and a central fresh water station. I grew up with -60F temps in the winter being possible, lots of people I knew didnt have running water and used outhouses. Glad it wasnt me though!

Very nice link. The realty places are closed today, but I've got 6 different realtors with 20-30 properties for under $7000.
Seven grand will get me about an acre. Now I just need to find out about any restrictions and whether or not the land will perk for 12 people.

This is cool to see you doing this! I hope it all works out for you. It may be of your best interest to wait until you have more $$ though.
