In my experience, the requirement of better skills and education is completely a function of how many applicants there are out there, nothing to do with the complexity of tasks being performed.  Obviously not the case for things like programming jobs, etc. but there's no need to go to college to become a run of the mill office worker.

While you are right with the way the economy is currently a bachelors degree is basically what a high school diploma was a few decades ago.

What exactly is a "run-of-the-mill office worker"?  What task do they perform?  That seems like a pretty silly construct to me.  A programmer is an office worker.  An engineer can be an office worker.  A lawyer is an office worker.  What profession are you really referring to?

Heres a story that might make it seem like some of you
dont have it thaaaaat bad.

There is a girl here at work who just got a masters in business,
she is working as some asshole lady's assistant, shares a desk with
her boss, which is a 1 person desk, doesnt even have her own comp chair,
ohhh and works for minimum wage, plus she models clothes and shoes
for product photography.

Pretty much any office job that doesn't require a science/CS degree or other specialized degree like an MD or JD.  MBA excluded.  Sounds like I'm equivocating but I believe that covers most office jobs.  Paralegal, editor, secretary, copywriter, most government bureaucrat positions, anything and everything dealing with HR, consultant, blogger, advertising agent, office managers of all shapes and sizes, data entry worker, technical writer, administrative assistant, customer support, PR agent, inventory specialist, web designer, any of those thousands of jobs that are too specific to have general-use names.  Any skills necessary in those professions can be taught on the job.

I can play the one up game here: I don't have a job.

I had my fair share of semi-awful minimum wage jobs coming up through the ranks, but none worse than working in the produce section at a grocery store.

I worked for this evil white trash cunt -- that was probably the worst thing but not far behind that was the actual job itself.

Making fucking goddamn fruit & vegetables look pretty. I mean like the way you stack them. I'd sit there for two hours stacking motherfucking apples in this really organized and orderly fashion (it's how we were told to do it) only to watch some 5 year old kid come by and just start fucking everything up just because his little ass was bored. It really was a shitty, horrible existence.

"So what do you do for a living?"

"I take fruit & vegetables out of a box and stack them."

lol man...when you put it in relative terms like that, it sounds pretty fucking horrible, but hey, at least you were getting paid.

True. It's hard to complain too much I guess when you see how many are unemployed. But I will say this -- really shitty low end jobs, going through them makes you better in the long run I think. For myself remembering those jobs motivates me not to return to that level of work.
