crushed oyster shell and BRF as substrate
    #1869108 - 08/31/03 08:34 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Has anyone ever used BRF and crushed oyster shell along with vermiculite as substrate? I was thinking of going that route but since I haven't heard anything about it I thought that I would ask first.

I don't think crushed oyster shell is used as a substrate but rather a ph buffer so I doubt it would benefit u at all

Why would you want to add crushed oyster shell to your substrate?

Apart from the ph issues, crushed oyster shell isn't a porous material like vermiculite, which is exactly why vermiculite is used: its structure enables it to soak up water and retain air. The water is released over the period the mycelium is growing, so it actually creates a constant source of moisture. Plus, as I pointed out, it keeps the substrate airy, which is important as growing mycelium needs air.
