suggestions on preventing overlay in PR's
    #1869100 - 08/31/03 08:27 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

im using the PF tek for my puerto ricans, im just gonna keep them as cakes to get faster results. but anyways, ive heared that PRs can overlay super easy and can affect fruiting. any ideas on how i can prevent this? i think that if i just wait until the jars fully colonize on the outside and then cold shock them this will stunt the mycelial growth and send them right into fruiting. i dont know if this will work, any feed back or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you have to worry about overlay unless you have a casing layer...but I may be wrong I've never had an overlay problem

yeah overlay is term used to describe a densely colonized casing layer where the mycelium gets matted down and becomes unable to absorb water. cakes don't get overlayed

They alway do this. I bet the overlay stuff looks something like this.
I got it on all the PRs I did.

This is just a huge BRF cake by the way

The shrooms grow right threw it or right out of it. No biggy at all.

Growing them on compost or dung cuts way back on this. If you're growing on cased grain or BRF cakes best thing to do is patch the mycelium that pops up first.. then wait another day until the layer seems uniform and you can hardly see it coming through, but you can still slightly see it. THEN, cold shock in the fridge for 24 hours.. after the 24 throw them in the fruiting chamber with a cool mist and run the air exchange method as much as possible. I recommend a cool mist terrerium if you don't use one already. The fish tank bubbler setup and others don't work nearly as well and don't provide as much air exchange. PR's abort and stall very easily, they need more fresh air circulation than a normal cube. Also run your light 24-7. You want these babies to fruit as soon as possible so you can prevent the overlay. Overlay= uneven flushes which drastically reduces your yield potential. It is your worst enemy when working with casings.

Search in the Grow Log and Pictures forum for Effed's grows with the PR strain. He grew them out great, the way you want it every time.

Almost forgot this. Overlay occurs also when the casing layer dries out way beyond it's normal moisture content. Keep the layer moist with a light misting twice a day and it helps to prevent it. The goal is to keep the layer at the same moisture content it was when you applied the layer.
