contamed jars

Is it ok to throw contamed cakes in a hole outside and cover with hay and manure? How well do they fight off the contams??

That's what I do with 'em. You'd be surprised how fast Nature cleans them up.

I haven't had any fruits yet, but the mycelium is running wild.

Mother Nature is the ultimate contam killer,  it seems like she also tends to throw a little extra potency in them.  She's a great chick!  :smirk:

It depends a bit on the wheater conditions and the conditions provided by your outdoor patch (I prefer a shady, humid spot). Of course, sometimes the contams are simply dominant over the mycelium, and there's no way it'll ever recover. But on the other hand, sometimes your lucky and some shrooms pop up. No matter what, it's always a chance worth taking, as the alternative would be throwing the contamed cakes away, with a 0% chance of fruits.

is it safe to say that the mushrooms are edible even though they came from a contaminated jar?

I'm of the opinion that if the contams win, you will have no shrooms to worry about. If the mushies show up and look healthy, eat 'em.
(talkin' outdoors only)

I might be off base here, but if you think about it, how do you know what kind of crud is growing on or around wild mushrooms. You don't, and you don't worry about it either.

I've picked thousands of cubies in cow pastures and never had a second thought. Occasionally there would be visible insect infestation, but it's really a common sense thing. Look before you leap

Oh yeah, get straw instead of hay. I didn't use either, but tomorrow I'm off to find some straw.
