quesions about popinkis (Armillaria species) AKA honey mushrooms
    #18636030 - 07/30/13 08:22 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

If I were to ever grow a gourmet mushroom, it would be popinkis. I remember when I lived in PA they grew wild and they tasted so good, it was the only mushroom I would actually want to eat.

My question is, are they cultivatable ? And if so where would I get the spores for this species?

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to grow your own and check the Sponserz/vendor section, googles not a bad place to start looking either.

Hi there,
Armillaria are very delicious indeed, and you can cultivate them! I prefer Armillaria mellea to gallica, but Aloha Medicinals has both species and several strains of each species. I would also not necessarily suggest staring from spores as the resulting strains may be weak with low BE, unreliable, and even contaminated as soon as they arrive to you. Try starting from an agar test tube, they are a little more pricey but if you make backups they can live for upwards of 75 years. Your results will be much better, and contamination is far easier to detect.

excellent, thank you for your info. I'm going to go with the agar to strengthen my chances of success.
I miss these mushrooms, they are very meaningful to me, from my childhood. My father is a really good cook and he would always cook them after a good mushroom hunt.

How are these cultivated? The "standard" supplemented sawdust, or something else?

Hi there,
You should be able to fruit Armillaria the same way you fruit shitake. Oak sawdust will work excellent, and there has been success using wheat bran in the past as well. There is a good research article called “the cultivation, bioactive components and pharmacological effects of Armillaria mellea”.

I thought long and hard about this question and decided that personally, I am fine with cultivating Armillaria... but I waffled on the fence long enough that I wonder if someone might want to convince me otherwise.  Does anyone have a problem with cultivating and being a human vector for an "aggressive" plant pathogen?  Particularly if you're cooperating with a culture isolated from another part of the planet?
