is it ok to sterilize the pf cakes and the jars in advance and keep them in a plastic bag till inoculation?

If so how long can they be in the plastic bag for?  :bong:

It can work but there is a greater chance of contams I would say.
Dont do it if you dont have to.

That's right effed, I agree. The longer you keep the jars while they're not actually inoculated, the higher the contam risk. As soon as you've inoculated the jars, the mycelium starts growing. This mycelium is capable of doing battle with contams (maybe it'll lose, depends on how strong the mycelium is/was when the contam set(s) in), while plain substrate will gladly provide a habitat for all sorts of ugly fungi etc.

So unless you really have to, don't wait with inoculating too long.

Sterlized unopened substrate is sterile , aka no chance of meanies!!!!!! I assume that most times " sterile " is much less than should be . I am speaking from experience sorry to say . So if sterile substrates are put into an air tight enviroment with out chance of exposure to contams it should remain that way indefinitely.

I think you get a relative steril condition, but if you wait too long, I don?t know why, but the jars get contamed. It happened to me and it will happen to anyone that works with a homemade sterility environment.

yeah.... hypothetically if they are completely sterile.......they will last FOREVER. but, that is never the case in reality... i would innoc. ASAP just to be safe. I triple boiled 20 jars and left them sitting in a plastic bag in my basement for 2 months, and i came back and they were ALL infected with bacillus. I dunno how or why, but it happened.... nice thought thou :-P

Oven sterilization just works well for glassware, metals, tin foil and such things, but it won?t work for grain and substrate sterilization.

Man, I just wrote the same thing in 2 dif. posts at the same time.

True, but, as others pointed out already, in reality it's nearly impossible to guarantee 100% sterile storing conditions. IF you can guarantee that, no problem, your sterile jars will remain sterile indefenitely. But in practice, at least some of the jars will contam no matter what you try. Maybe because of not 100% complete sterilization of the substrate in the first place, maybe because of contam spores induced into the substrate at a later point in time, but it just happens. That's why I'd advise not to store sterile jars. It just creates an added opportunity for contams to get hold of your project, which is simply something you want to avoid.
