PF Tek jars too dry?
    #1866767 - 08/30/03 09:22 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Its been 4 days since I looked at my jars, and I looked at them today. After I steamed them for an and hour and 20 minutes, I let them sit overnight (12+ hours). Innoculated them, and stuck them in my incubator. Now when i Looked at them, they looked dry. I say this because the vermiculite is shiny again. Did I not use enough water when I was making the substrate?

Just what the directions said...measured out enough vermiculite for 20 jars, added water until it couldnt hold anymore. by that, i meant i added enough so that only a little bit pools when you tip the bowl to the side. Then, after I added the BRF, i added a teensy bit more water to help the rice coat the verm

sure did...2 layers. Didnt use lids that came with the jars though. So, all in all, I have 2 layers of foil. One that would be used to inject through, and another to cover up injection holes.

So, are my jars too dry? Yes? No? Maybe so?

Nah, I think they're just right, chopperdave. My jars always look a bit dry, but if you feel the substrate (don't do that after you sterilized it!) it feels humid. Mind, the substrate can better be a bit too dry than too wet, IMO. Anyway, I think you're safe. Just wait a couple of days, and see if any mycelium growth occurs.

TxTec: kewl pic of DG! Used to have that scan from the Pulse album booklet as my wallpaper for a while...
