Got an interview to be a math teacher
    #18666573 - 08/06/13 02:13 AM (10 years, 8 months ago)

But I dunno man... I've been "unemployed" for over a year now.

I use quotes because unemployed means without, but seeking employment.  It's more accurate to say I've been sitting in my apartment, on my couch, drinking beer in my underwear for over a year now.

Anywayyy... the local public school district is desperate for math teachers.  I worked for them for a while a couple years ago, while I was still at university.  I've also tutored on and off for a couple years, starting when I was in college (I got a math degree), and I figured what the hell, I'll apply.

Well, I applied Friday night and during Monday I got a call from a very desperate sounding principal wanting to meet with me ASAP.

I was really excited about applying... until I got the call.  Now, I kind of just want to... keep doing nothing.  My friends and family keep telling me I'm a great teacher, and I've got references from physicians whose homeschooled kids I tutored, to the CEO of a large company in my metropolitan area writing recommendations for me.

Thing is... I'm really a misanthrope.  I really can't stand being around people most of the time (which is why I don't like to leave my apartment, except to go to the pool or buy beer) and I don't know how I'd do teaching a boatload of kids who don't want to learn maths.  It's easy enough teaching kids who want to learn and improve their grades, but this school hasn't been accredited for years because their SOL scores are so low, and my parent's friends who teach in the public school system here are warning me it's going to be a challenge.  I was lucky growing up, as I went to private schools and had parents who FORCED me to do my homework every night and work on math during the summers, so I was always ahead, but most of these kids I'm sure aren't going to have that kind of structure.

I feel like they might like me and pay attention more, because I'd be way weirder/wackier/more sarcastic than the average teacher, but I don't know if I could help their performance.

So basically, I have two options... I can go for the interview, probably get the job (because apparently no one else who is qualified has applied), or I can come up with a reason not to or blow the interview intentionally.

Now, I know what I *should* do here, I think.  I probably *should* give it a try, get out of my comfort zone, and try to help some undereducated and underprivileged kids.  At the very worst, I would get my teaching license during the year they contract me for, and possibly get canned at the end of the year if their SOL scores suck too much.  On the other hand, I suppose I could turn some lives around.

People keep telling me "if you help even one kid, it's worth it", but the school system and the government sure as shit don't see it that way, and getting canned over SOL scores would suck nuts.

My wife wants me to take the job so we'll have a second salary and can rent a house (we already can on hers, but we'd have more options, and more beer money for me if we had a second salary), but I think my parents are giving us their house in the spring anyway, so I don't know if it's worth the bother (my father is retiring and wants to build a couple more houses in other states, and keep this house in the family).  Also, the benefits would be nice (but I already have really quality health insurance).  Fucking first world problems, man.

Anyway... what would you guys do?  Imagining that you're a misanthropic loner who actively avoids human contact and is frightened of the idea of being surrounded by high schoolers again, and having your performance judged by their performance.  If companies all worked that way, managers could be fired for the incompetence of underlings, rather than the underlings just getting fired.  But noooo, not the school system.

Sounds like you have always had a pretty easy life regarding money, which isn't the case for me or any of my family so idk your point of veiw. But I wouldn't hesitate to take this job since you already have teaching experience.

You're right, I won't lie, I've been lucky and privileged.  I pretty much grew up without my dad as he left for work before I got up before school and went to sleep before he got home; he was only around when I was to be punished, pretty much.

My mother was stay at home for a while, then started a number of her own businesses (which my father funded to keep her happy).

I love my dad for sure, but he's a workaholic.  Wish he would have been around more.  But he grew up in the "if you provide and don't beat the fuck out of your family, you're automatically a good father/husband" generation.

So yeah... I had a lot of opportunities and wanted for little growing up.  I didn't get the '72 Corvette for my 18th birthday like I wanted, but cry me a fucking river (he had to pick me up from the cops a few days before my birthday).  I didn't realize how privileged me and all my friends were until I got out of college and found out what starting salaries were like in most fields.

My dad is in energy production and currently makes around a quarter million a year; I guess he's got around 2 mil in investments and another 400K or so in Krugerrand (sounds fucking weird, but he has them), and more in property he owns.  It'll make for a nice inheritance, but I suppose until then I have to do something instead of living off his largesse, right?  I mean, unlike some of my high school friends, I wasn't a trust fundie kid.

I think the thing I'm most afraid of is trying and failing, or actively being dominated by a room full of kids.  When I worked for the school system before, there was always a teacher around to keep them under control.  I flip a shit too easily, and cuss too easily, but I think I could manage myself if I had to.

I say give it a shot man.  You really have nothing to loose.  Getting canned because of the SOL scores is no worse than blowing of the interview and such.  I have to teach a class this Fall because I need the money, but I really don't want to.  It can be very satisfying when you see the light bulb flash on.  That's my two cents, but do what you want.

Just try to do notes and lecture, maybe tell some bullshit stories once in awhile, make them do hands on work in note books so they can go at their own speed and learn something while in school.

Take the job, save and then invest.
Playing with stocks or any kind of investment is fun (seriously, it's addicting and interesting if you treat it like a video game and just keep racking up points you can get amazing highs but also decrepit lows)

I suppose I don't have anything to lose... getting fired over SOL scores can't be worse than lengthening the periods of unemployment already on my employment history, can it?

I don't know how I'm going to explain the ones I already have.  Like, "uhh, well, my father is wealthy and my mother is indulgent so he paid my rents and bills while I traveled and relaxed, trying to find my place in life.  After he paid for 7.5 years of college."

Hey that's a good idea!  Making students keep notebooks that I could check every Friday!  Fucking A, I knew I'd get some good advice on here... I'm afraid a lot of them will just blow homework off, but if I have them keep binders/notebooks with class notes, class work and homework, I think it'd be much easier to gauge their progress and understanding.  Thanks man!  5 shrooms to you if I haven't rated you yet (though I think I have).

I don't know about that... I let my father handle my investments.  I'm a bad gambler dude, I remember the first time he took me to a casino.  I kept having to bum more money off him because I couldn't leave the blackjack table.  I've never messed with stocks because of that specific reason.  I don't even know what he has my money invested in.  I thought about doing a sneak and peek on his and my investments recently to figure out just how much is there and what it's invested in (I can get into the locked cabinet where he keeps all the paperwork) but I've been too lazy to do so.

Well in that case you should definitely get to know the students on a personal level on the first day, a great way to do this would be to use ice.

I am quite the beer connoisseur, thank you.

In fact, I taught my dad how to brew beer, since his dream is to open a restaurant/bar after he retires and builds the houses he wants to get built.  I built him a microbrewery in his basement for a father's day gift a few years back (I'd been brewing wine since I was 14 or 15, adapting it to beer wasn't hard... I did use his money to build it though).

I also have a successful black carpenter ant colony.  I'm their deity.  I think that's an accomplishment.

I'm also married to a wonderful woman... her family thinks I'm a bum, and I have to agree, but she loves me.  Before she became a bank manager I taught her how to grow fungus.

There's more, but I think I have a fair bit accomplished...  In all seriousness, I'm really afraid of failure.  Getting fired doesn't scare me so much, it's if the kids don't do well, that would crush me.  Whenever I had a student that I was tutoring who would improve, then suddenly start doing poorly because they stopped studying, I would obsess over it and blame myself.  I'd be crushed if that happened to an entire class.

I quit my cushy corporate job last summer, even though my manager and the building manager were grooming me for a management position and a switch to a more interesting department.  I had just developed a paperless credit system for the top department (I worked at the national shared accounting center for a huge north American company) but left because I thought my supervisor was a cunt and she denied two days of a five day request for vacation so I could go to NC with my family.  The only things I've done since then are landscaping, built a few custom designed Koi ponds with custom built filters (all my own designs) and some math tutoring.

Okay, I lol'd.

But seriously, what do you do if a student makes a false accusation against you?  Like if they stay after a class and try to blackmail you by saying something like, "raise my grade or I'll tell them you offered to raise it in exchange for a blowjibber".

That's another thing that scares the crap out of me.  Some woman accused my aunt of sexually harassing her child (my aunt is a teacher) just because my aunt hugged her during class.

I feel like I'd need to keep a recorder in my pocket at all times in case a student wanted to talk to me in between or after classes, just so I could record everything said.

I agree with aiyobro, the notebooks are a great idea.  I find that you can keep students engaged by telling personal stories related to the subject matter.  Anytime your teaching something and it reminds you of something you went through, use it.  Students love that shit.

Alright, alright... now that my confidence is getting up a little by talking about it, I'm going to wait until it's morning time here (I mean proper morning, not this pre-dawn bullshit) and call the lady back and agree for an interview time.

Thanks, you guys did help... and I think talking about my fear of failure helped too.

Sorry to hear that bro, but I keep a mound of those black cow eating ants in the wild in a pit out by where I dig for clay. They are mean mah fukkers, but if I throw some old meat in there( like a pork chop) it's literally gone in minutes.

Damn!  I wish I lived wherever you live!

Ants have always been a passion of mine, but I've always had shit luck catching queens... this may be the 5th I've ever caught.  I was feeding mine bread soaked with honey for sugars and crickets for protein, but I need to be mixing in multivitamins with the honey.  The queen still has some workers, so the colony is still salvageable.

Wow... okay, so I called them back at about 8:10 this morning.  They want me to come in an interview at 2:00.

They're really desperate to fill this, it sounds like.  As long as I don't screw the pooch during the interview, I might just get it.

Keep your fingers crossed for me guys...  I'll report back after 2.

Yeah, I forgot, there's a thread for that.

Hopefully I can make a difference here... the school hasn't had accreditation for the past several years because of SOL scores and whatnot.  Hopefully I can be a part of helping that turn around.

Well, I think I fucked it up... I just got so nervous before the interview, and had kind of a brain freeze.

A girl who graduated a year behind me with the same degree (BS in Mathematics) got a job at the same school like 2 weeks ago, and has no experience.  I've worked for the city public schools before in a tutoring capacity, and worked as an independent tutor.

I feel bummed man.

Actually it turns out I got a call from another school, one that I have a family friend working at, that called me today- the principal wants an interview.  Maybe this school was meant to just be a practice run... I guess we'll see how this goes now.

Just chill durring the interview dude. From what you've told us, its not like you really NEED the job or anything, so fuck it if they don't hire you. Just remember that durring the interview, might calm you down. Or you could take a little benzo before, or a few drinks. Nothin like a drunk teacher!

I'm on valium daily for anxiety issues.  I did take some beforehand :frown:

I would have a few drinks before hand but my mother has made comments recently about how I've smelled like an old drunk sometimes recently, with it coming out of my pores and what not... my mother has an unusually strong sense of smell, I can drink, take a shower, brush my teeth, listerine, smoke some cigs, and she can still smell it, but I don't want to risk having the interviewers smell it on me.

I think one thing is I had no time to psych myself up for this one; I got the message, called them back this morning and they said they wanted me to come in at 2 o'clock if I could.  I agreed, even though I had gotten no sleep (had stims to keep me going) but I think I could have used a day to ponder more about what they may have asked and what not.

Now that I know the kind of stuff they'll ask, I think I'll be readier to interview.  And I only got the message from this school after they had closed today (same as the message yesterday; got it at night, called this morning, they wanted to meet me but said I could come another day if 2 wasn't convenient, should have gone with that).  I think when I call this other school tomorrow I'm just going to say there's no way I can come in the same day.

And yeah, I don't REALLY need the money, but I feel like it would make my parents and wife happy, and currently my wife's family thinks I'm a bum.  They love and like me, but I know they think I'm a bum.  I'd just like for them to respect me, and not think she married a waste of space.  It would also give me more money for booze.

Just go in with all you have to offer. If you can teach Math then spread your knowledge, kids will benefit from it and so will you in many ways, your personal life as well as your gain in confidence towards your Wife's family. If you have to have a drink to get through the interview, have one but don't get wasted. As long as you don't get too sloshed you might score the career that leads you into something you enjoy doing long term.  Good Luck

Yeah, I was on the klonos for a few years before I decided I wanted to get off, got my doctor to switch me to valium since it's easier to taper from.  Gone down to 14 mg/day from 25.

That's good to hear, if you do end up landing the job your anxiety might decrease. There's something about coming home after knowing you've made a difference that induces a wonderful natural opiate like high
If you don't exercise I strongly suggest you do as I've read studies that suggest regular exercise is as effective as anti-depressants. Cardio can be tedious if it's not something that you enjoy such as a martial art, try and find something you do enjoy and develop a routine. I don't do much cardio at the moment but I regularly lift weights and it helps keep me happy more then any pill ever has  If you need any help with nutrition or fitness just let me know and I'l fill you in on what you need to know to get started.

So apparently the principal of the school I'm interviewing with today wants me specifically.  When he found out I'd interviewed with another school yesterday he freaked and was trying to desperately contact me.  Apparently he grew up in my old neighborhood, has met my parents, and my parent's neighbor is a teacher for him and she's told him about me.

I have an interview in an hour and a half at this school;  this school is much better than the one I interviewed at yesterday, and I think that interview may have gone poorly anyway... I may be being hard on myself, but I think they thought I wouldn't be able to handle or relate to their students, since I come from a MUCH different background.

So hopefully this dude still wants me there after he meets me.

Woot, it went great!  He loved me, we sat there and just talked for 2 hours!

Then, when I got home, a THIRD school called for an interview!

I'm really hoping for the second one, it's the best of the three.  Apparently, according to my mom's friend, the first two schools are fighting over me and I should expect an offer soon, but it may be up to HR where I go if more than one school wants me.  They normally put a person wherever there are more vacancies if you've interviewed with more than one school, but sometimes they let you pick.  The first school has 2 vacancies, and the second one has 1.  I don't know how many the third has, but I've done tutoring there before.

But not by a local public school...

By my old Catholic high school.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!!!!!!!  :rofldrunk:

I got interviewed in the same room that they used to grill me in before suspending me.  My old vice principal conducted the interview... I was just like, you guys DO remember who I am, right?

Classes start Monday.

Also, private school is pretty G.

All the students are issued Chromebooks, I just got mine today.

I'm pretty fucking stoked.  All my friends say that I'm sarcastic/funny to the point where they think kids will like and listen to me.

And even if not, it's a good source for venting my misanthropy... even though shit has changed a lot.  No more Saturday detentions (show up at 7 AM for a couple hours of detention, after the old principal quit, no one else wanted responsibility for it) and no "forum" dress code (forum was a stricter version of our dress code, instead of khakis or blue pants and a collared shirt, we had to wear a white button down shirt with no logo, a Catholic school issued tie, and navy blue pants with belt and dress shoes, and girls had to wear the classic Catholic schoolgirl skirt and shirt) every Friday, now it's just regular dress code, and they're on the 10 point grading scale, not the 7 point grading scale I was on while I was there.

I feel robbed.

But, fuck it, I'm going to volunteer to be there Saturday mornings to give Saturday detentions I think.  I suffered through a countless number of them (painting over my own pot leaf drawings on the bathroom stalls, they didn't know that was me, but it was my punishment), and it sounds to me like they're getting soft.  They can suck it up and deal with it if regular detention isn't enough.

Structure helped the fuck out of me in high school, these kids would do with more... the principal hired me, the diocese backed that decision, and therefore Holy Mother Church also backs me.  I have divine right in my classroom!

Next up... just need to become emperor of somewhere.  Ruling with divine right.

 G as in awesome, not G as in gangster... although, one thing I can say about Catholic school is that cruelty has been elevated to an art form.  There's no physical bullying, at least around here, but the emotional/mental bullying is a perfected science/art.  I don't know what public school is like, but I know the torment inflicted by other kids in private school can be unbearable...

Also, the Catholic middle schools here, the nuns can still hit you with rulers or yardsticks.  When I was in middle school, the preferred method of punishment was being locked in a closet, with a single desk, and a dim, yellow, flickering light bulb for hours on end.  I called it the SHU, or being removed from genpop and put in solitary.  I actually preferred it, but several of my friends can't stand close spaces like elevators to this day because of that.  You can't do that shit in public school round here.

I fucking knew someone would eventually bring up Coaster... man... that guy was the bane of my existence for a while. just because he would make so many random threads and clog the pub like a messy dump in the toilet, or because he was always just on his KaNdY KiD routine, or posting about making/shooting ketamine with his GF.

Fucking annoyed me.  I got a ban once for making a moral panic type post about the "Raping Raver" directed towards him... in one pic he had a bracelet that had the letters "SEX SI..." and I continued it, saying it was common to see Raping Ravers wearing bracelets saying "SEX SIN PERMISO", or "sex without permission".

It was a long ass post that got some good lulz, but a mod eventually locked it.
