Jake: Math Prodigy Who Claims To See The '4th Dimension'
    #18665575 - 08/05/13 09:50 PM (10 years, 8 months ago)

What's your opinion on this?

Is it fact or something that an incredibly gifted autistic child created in order to accredit his talent to a supernatural occurrence further inflating his ego?

I have no clue but it's interesting and worth discussion either way.

Hack. Reporters look for prodigies to fill an archetype for a banal narrative the public soaks up.

That was impressive. I wonder what would happen if one of these savants took some hallucinogens. . .

Synesthesia and autism. How shocking.

Synaesthesia is something I've always wanted to have. Seeing sound or smelling colors? Fuck yes, I wonder what tripping would do. Bring back down to reality, or amplify the synaesthesia?

I would guess that it wouldn't have any effect, just like it doesn't have any synesthetic affect on most people.

Maybe it would depend on how profound it was though. For people like math savants who see numbers as combinations of shapes and colors or shit like that maybe it wouldn't change anything because it's already so pronounced, but for someone who just has faint crossover it would be amplified.

Or maybe I have no idea what the fuck I'm talking about.

Why would he make that up, there are video games that emulate the fourth dimension by adding extra coordinates, scientist were peering into the 9th dimension back in highschool

yeah physics and math go up to different dimensions, but who's to say which is correct?

Dimension is an emotionally charged word. It seems "deep" and "intelligent".

Dimension in math just means how many "degrees of freedom" you have. A 2x2 matrix is 4 dimensional.

In physics, there are 3 spacial dimensions and 1 temporal dimension. There's nothing to "see".

Don't start on "that 11 dimensional youtube video". It's bad, unsupported philosophy that misuses the term to seem deep.

I don't know in calc three we used a shadow to find data on Surface area of 3d objects or something, but i believe their are other spatial possibilities outside of 3d. if we can't exist in 1d,2d but we can exist in 3d then I think there are other things.

That's a mathematical tool. Math is unrelated to reality.

You're not exactly proving your point, if mathematicians can follow rules and proof each others work to get answers why can't they work outside the realm of what we exist in without it being humdrum? There are plenty of other fields that are unrelated to inventing stuff for consumers, why does math have to be the whipping boy?

And you critiqued the kid as if he was nothing great. This is good luck to have someone like this around, they'll advance us another 40 years.

He doesnt claim to see the "4th dimension" He says he sees math in 4 dimensions.  From the little demo he did it sounds like he has these complex visualizations for numbers, instead of the usual emptiness anyone of us would see when we attempted to visualize a square of 6 or what have you he would see this geometric representation of the number.
