the duelity of the human mind.
    #1866071 - 08/30/03 04:57 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Yesterday, I went to a pep rally at my school. I went with the others from my residence hall. We have all just met, but we act like friends. I was asked to accompany some people to dinner. Nobody cared that I have long hair and seven peircings in my head. Everyone acted like reasonable people. I had fun. Which is odd that I would enjoy that. It gave me hope.

Today I went shopping. Traffic was horrible. People cutting people off, blatantly defing traffic laws. The stores were packed with asshole employees, and customers obsessed with buying and buying all they could.

My campus has about 40,000 people so the stores don't even have to pretend to care about you. If you don't shop there, there are still 39,999 people who will, and more coming every year. So the employees and business act in the most money hunger, smug way they care to and are up front and honest with you about not giving a shit.

The other shoppers are blind to this and most everything else going on around them. The only thing that matters to them is playing race car, or buying all they can afford.

Sometimes I think that material goods are used to distract people from the important things on earth.

Sometimes I think that getting behind the wheel of a car will cause a human being to lose between 5 and 10 IQ points.

I don't understand how people can be so cool, down to earth, and understanding one moment, and then vain, selfish, and greedy the next.

I've realized I can't save the world, and that all I can do if I am very lucky is to keep myself from becoming what I hate. I already know that I too possess the qualities that I see and hate in others. It has been beat into me for the last 21 years. However, I want to believe that I can limit the negative efffects my actions have on others, and I want to believe I can keep the truly important things in life as my first priorities.

Sometimes when I talk like this people get confused and angry.

Well, it can't take just one man to save the world (although it can take one money hungry Cowboy to ruin it). Just start with yourself and live your life despite all of the negative around you, and being in a higher consciousness sort of mindset continously will give the possibility of others picking up on it, realizing how much better it would be to live their own lives in that way..

It takes a group effort to save the world. Go for it! hehe
Peace.

Melancholy [Re: HagbardCeline]

Beautiful post, Larry.

Absolutely, fireworks_god. Living by example is the best way to have an impact. People are naturally drawn to peace of mind. If we can have it for ourselves, other people will have it too.

>> Sometimes I think that material goods are used to distract people from the important things on earth.

This is a crime perpetrated by whom? Surely those who would employ such a technique would do so only from being bewitched by their own deception. This earth is bursting with joy, bursting with life and beauty. How then can we be so far removed from it, and when will we come home?

It is certainly depressing to see materialism and thing-addiction so rampant all around us. It is even more upsetting when we start to realize these aspects of ourselves. What's worse is when any attempt to articulate these feelings is made publically, only a venomous response is received. These things make some of us feel very isolated.

In past pondering, Larry, I've found that your point begs an uncomfortably familiar question. How can we enjoy life constantly questioning the authenticity of everything we experience, believe, or are told to believe? No wonder American Idol gets such enormous ratings.

How long can it last?

It will last until humankind evolves to the point where they realize we are all seperate manifestations of one entity capable of thinking for ourselves and excersixing their mind unhindered by society or law.

Is it all you want it to be?

Just a quick aside, notice the parentheses... Guess it couldn't be avoided, that politics forum is getting to my brain... I apologize.
Peace.

It wasn't a big deal, I just try and stay away from that because it gets me too fired up.

I have to watch my stress levels. :spliff:
