Storing rye berries in the freezer? * 1
    #9793202 - 02/13/09 11:19 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I've been storing my rye berries in the freezer, inside of ziploc freezer bags. Any word on your experiences with this? Yea? Nay? How do you store your grain?

After hydration or before?  I store dry rye berries in the paper bag it comes in, on the floor of my dining room.  When the mice are sleeping in winter, I usually toss it into the storage shed to get it out of the way.

Before hydration, when the grain is "new."

It shouldn't be needed if you keep your grains dry. During the freezing and thawing process condensation can form around the grains causing damage. That's why serious coffee drinkers (I'm not one of them) say placing your beans in your freezer is a big no no. Just a cool dry place should be fine bro.

Okay, thanks guys. I've removed them from the freezer and now I'm storing them at room temperature.

I've been having poor results with my grain projects so far, so I'm trying to eliminate variables.

What if it was after pressure cooking them? Id like to just build a mini stock pile. How long can they sit in the jars after being sterilized? Also should i leave the foil on the top of the lids?

My grains sit in my nasty basement until I'm ready to use them. They get sterilized anyways so the cleanliness of your storage area is not a big issue.

I generally don't let my jars sit for more than a day or two after pressure cooking them before I do grain to grain. They should not be stored for later use after sterilizing them. I remove the foil as soon as they come out of the pressure cooker.
