Finished harvesting first flush. The substrate shrunk A LOT so I'm gonna be dunking in a couple of days after i get back. It's currently sitting in my closet, and will hopefully patch itself up a little bit from any roughness.

right that's basically why i did it no time and lots to do...  i'm trying to decide on whether i want to start more grains for a master MS or wait on my clones; i mean one will be ready long before the other but the way my tubs are producing i don't know what to do with what i have...

I cant decide whether to make more jars now with what is essentially MS or wait however long it takes to isolate on agar.. So many decisions. I tried meandering around my nearby college campus in the bio labs looking for a prof who would just give me a few petri dishes and parafilm. Got some free parafilm  but he only had really nice glass dishes so no go there

Ive been using this one jar of wbs to do g2g transfers so I've shaken a fully colonized jar and let it recover ~3 times. The mycelium is super dense right now so do you guys think it's ok to continue using for g2g xfers? How about if I wanted to no longer use it as a master jar and include it with a few other jars when spawning to a monotub?

Hey all, how should i go about dunking my substrate? Should it be completely submerged or can it be like half way submerged with something on top to keep it lowered? Thanks!

Also, pins are forming for the second flush already. But the substrate shrank quite a bit.. i highly doubt there's enough water for them.

Personally I usually don't bother with dunking until the third flush, by which time the sub can be as little as 70% of the original size or less. You can fully submerge the sub if its really dried out, but usually just floating it in few inches of water in the tub is enough. A good trick is to put a couple dowels through your tub holes to hold the sub in place and force some water in. But it really does not take much to rehydrate a bulk sub. Floating the sub for a hour or two and rinsing off the top is usually more than enough.

Too late now.

Anywho, lots of pins showing up. I'm excited! :amanita2: (hell yea happy amanita is happy as fuck. look at the cute lil' fucker bounce!)

Also, some of the stumps got in the water and they look squishy and are now dark blue. Do i leave them or?.. Cause wet stumps sounds like a bad idea but.. hell if i know.

They should dry out and end up getting reabsorbed back into the sub.

Tubs are going somewhat slow for me, think its the temp in the room has been a little lower, 63-75f, mostly in the high 60s.  I ordered my agar mix as well, hopefully it gets here this week.  Psyched about doing agar work.

First off, I'm sorry for posting a rather off-topic question.
I'm about to make some slave jars (jars who will receive grain from master jars),
this is my second batch with organic rye berries.
Yet again, my soak-water looks dark and really unclear now 20hrs after soaking.
Last time I rinsed them a couple more times before boiling,
but now I've read several thread where people just boil in this water anyway.

I was wondering if they are talking about fermentation-problems only,
or if it's normal to get really dirty water without the smell and just boil in it anyway.

PS: I'm not using any gypsum, so nothing lost if I rinse.
Except maybe some nutes from the grain, idk.
Soaked in really hot water from tap.

Pardon my terrible english, morning time around here :pipesmoke:

The only reason I would ever drain/rinse before boiling rye is if there is some fermentation starting, and it smells like someone took a shit in your kitchen.  That tea'd out stuff is nothing to worry about either, its like shaving a snowcone off a glacier, not gonna affect anything.

EDIT:oops, responded to an old post!

yeah that's gotta be a couple months old at least :tongue2:
Think I remember that I did NOT rinse before I boiled that batch, it all went fine.
I've started soaking rye berries 16hrs max, that seems to be the magic point where the water gets dirty and is looking sorta sketchy.

Ahh, I made it through twenty something pages.

I'll be doing this in a few days, I've already nocked up 30 jars g2g.
