Hey, I'm about to pasteurize in bags for the first time. I read your tek with the roaster on page 20 or something, but then I thought you would need a filter patch or something on your ziplock bags?
I thought it was needed for the heat to distribute or something? Btw, I don't have a roaster, so I'm using a pot if that matters..
It really is more like an electric double boiler than anything else. I didn't get a chance to make my tubs today so it will be when I get home tomorrow night. That's the nice thing about multipsore, we can take our time as long as we dont take too long.
To tide you over here are 2 tubs I put into fruiting the other day

Alright its time to make some Tubs! So, in the name of full disclosure I lost 1 jar to a yet unknown contam. I am not sure if it is competing mold or bacteria as there are borders forming in spots on the non-colonized areas. So lets pretend I have all 12 jars - if you end up losing one or 2 happens to the best of us.
Items Needed: Black Trash bag 12 qts colonized grain Pasteurized Substrate Drilled Tubs Clean Water Scissors, knife or scalpel Duct Tape Masking Tape Gloves(optional)

The glove is to just aid in cleanup. Your pasteurized substrate and your colonized grain is as contam resistant as you can get, plus messy. This is all done in open air, I still turn off fans and reduce drafts an hour before hand, but this really is not as necessary as previous procedures.
Step 1:
Open your jars and give them a good sniff, should smell like fresh mushrooms. Sour smells are a sign of bacteria, molds could also have an opposing smell.
Break up your grains with your preferred method. I use my drop and roll technique, but whatever breaks your grain and not your jars will work.
The jar should go from looking like its full colonized to barely having any mycelium.

After your grain is broken up you will want to give your jars yet another smell (especially in my case where I lost a jar in the G2G process)
Step 2:
Fill your jars up with clean water until there is a one inch head of water in your jar. Soak anywhere from 10-20 minutes and drain.

Step 3:
While my jars are soaking I am going to make my liners in my tub. I am going to take 1 trash bag per tub and pull it all the way out without opening the bag itself.

Drape it over your tub and push it into the tub to line the bottom. Then use masking tape to tape the edges. Leave it a little slack.

Step 4:
Drop in 2 qts spawn and spread it around the bottom.

Now if using bags for your substrate tear rip the top off the bag - this way if you have anything that was stuck inside the flap area this won't get in our tubs.

Drop in your now open bag of substrate and loosely mix with your spawn thats in the bottom of the tub. Keep it fluffy and even amounts of spawn through out the substrate. Also, keep the substrate as flat/smooth as possible without packing down the mixture. Remember mycelium likes fluffy not packed and air circulation will like a flat surface.

Adjust your liner if needed by adjust the tape, you might gain some more room this way if you taped your bag too tight in the beginning
Put in 2 more qts of spawn and 1 more bag of substrate, mix evenly again.
We should be close to the fill line or right at it. So lets frost these tubs.
Drop in your last 2 qts of spawn and smooth around the top. Take loose handfulls of coir from a 3rd bag and ensure your grains are covered. I usually use about 1/4" of substrate over these 2 qts. This portion DOES NOT get mixed, just cover your grains, you do not want to have exposed grains.

Step 4:
Trim your liner(this is the hardest part of making a tub). I use a scalpel as it is the easiest, anything sharp will work.

Put the lid on
Duct tape all holes, I usually put 2 or 3 overlapping strips over it. These tubs can get humid and the tape will loosen up, so ensuring that extra coverage helps keep it in place during colonization.

Put on the shelf and leave it alone.

Any leftover spawn and sub I make these mini-bricks usually 2qts spawn 4qts substrate. Once colonized I put them in my SGFC and treat them like BRF cakes minus the dunk and roll.

Again, great stuff, tbagtag. Thanks for continuing with this grow-along.
I have one comment:

I used to do this too, until both FrankHorrigan and TranscendingLife told me it wasn't necessary. In my grows since then I've discovered they were right. I get better results just mixing all the substrate with all the spawn -- it colonizes faster and more evenly.

There's 4 other quarts of spawn mixed directly below. Usually I am ready to fruit in 4-5 days. I don't directly layer the spawn, I churn it in. I do what you're describing for bricks that don't have liners as I need to ensure the whole brick is colonized before moving it to a fruiting chamber.
I did read through your link and I think others should too, there is a lot of good information in there. But when using a liner it is impossible to ensure your tub is at 100% colonization when you fruit. Too much exposed grain can dry out just like an over thick layer of coir.
But I got 2 more tubs to make soon after I clear some space. I'll try it with the same spawn/coir ratio, I've never waited 3 weeks to fruit though like some of the horror stories, I think the longest I've gone is 10 days with fruits showing up 5 days after. But that was when I thought you were supposed to pack your sub tight and ratio's were supposed to be super spot on.

Hey Psilly, you should be on flush number 2 by now with your tub. I just did my first agar to grain transfer!

Well here is the pics of the second flush

And here is the the total take from the tub so far.

The substrate from my tub is now sitting on the ground in the woods. I will water it with the hose daily and report my results when it flushes. I have had really good results doing this in the past. My last one I got over 4 oz off the third flush with this technique

Hi All,
Just a quick update on my progress on tbags grow along! Evidently my "handjob" re-shaking of my too full jars worked! They appear to have recovered well. I wanted to share a pic and ask do they look far enough along that I should begin preparing my substrate? Thanks!

Looks like they should be good in about 2 or 3 more days. I would start my substrate tomorrow if you're able to.

Thanks tbag. Yes, I am actually on vacation this week so it could not be a better time to work on my substrate and maybe get my monotub in place by the weekend.

tbag, as I head towards this part of the process hopefully I have a question please. So, once I have everything mixed up in my tubs I just sit it aside and leave it alone? I don't cover it, or block it from light in any way? Just set it and leave it? My room gets quite a bit of natural light during the day so I want to make sure how to be sure my mono colonizes correctly. Thanks.

We don't want to cover the sub as room temperature is fine for colonization, also we prevent the blockage of gas exchange we receive from the lid. Light is not a required pinning trigger and will not put your tubs into fruiting early. If you crack the lid and expose to air that will start pinning. My grow room is pretty well lit. I have not had a problem with early pinning unless contaminant is present (its actually pretty neat to see, one day your tub has no pins, later on its a crazy ass flush, you cut and see a field of green)
I edited my post on mixing the tubs for clarity, the first 4 qts of spawn and substrate needs to be mixed pretty evenly. The last 2 qts gets spread out like you're frosting a cake and then sprinkled with coir. This works great for tubs with liners. I already have visible colonization on my tubs as we speak. These were the tubs I spawned at 7pm last night.

Completely off-topic, but this is just an example of how much of a shit shoot MS inoculation is.
I shot up some WBS jars with B+ about 10 days ago, and those are still showing no visible signs of growth.
Just shot up some more WBS jars prepared the same way 3 days ago, with ecuador this time. I woke up this morning to the first signs of growth inside of these jars.
What I get out of all of this... I really need to start doing LC/agar work.

And tbag I still have a long way to go as my grain jars have only been germinated for a few days but I think one my two tubs im gonna try your sub mix method and franks just to get an idea of what I like ive always just mixed and covered but I like the frosting the cake idea

I cant take credit for frosting the cake idea. That was from someone long, long ago who I can't recall. Again this really only works out well if using a liner. Otherwise churn all of it really good to distribute the inoculated spawn evenly. But it's not looking like I'll be waiting that long for full colonization.
