I usually cut them open and line the bottom of the tub, then cut off the access after spawning, right at substrate level, but using the bags as bags would work as well.
Just cut them right above the substrate, and line a monotub with them.
As long as it takes up the same amount of space, and has the same amount of moisture, it will act the same and the monotub should remain set and forget(not needing to be misted/fanned), at least until after the first flush, and yea that would keep them separate.
But what would be the point? If one side contams wouldnt the other?

Not necessarily....one half could be removed if there is a sign of contam....even if left the other one might not necessarily contam....this all depends on how good the individual substrate is at being contam resistant....
I have had tubs that have made it thru 4 or 5 flushes without contamming sitting right next to tubs that contam before the end of the second flush with trich...I have noticed, for me at least........sometimes some substrates just do not want to contam...
This has been my experience....

Different stokes for different folks. Personally with the scope of this thread that it is aimed at people who have never done monos or have continually failed I wouldnt suggest splitting the tubs in 2.
If he has to remove 1 side and only has half of the tub full he might as well move the brick to a SGFC at that point. It would get better humidity, GE and FAE that in a mono if only one side of the 66qt was full.
Also, NaH, don't you think they should get 1 successful grow down before starting to experiment?

Thought I would show off my mono for this thread...not growing along....but I guess that's just semantics.

I just spawned to bulk for the first time the other day. After seeing all the moisture on the walls Im wondering if there will be an issue with water pooling under the plastic? It seems it would be good to poke holes in the liner so the water can be reabsorbed?

Water pooling under the liner is absolutely no concern and is completely normal (and expected).

Alright, it looks like I am going to spawn on Monday so I am going to drill the holes in my tub tonight and prep my substrate tomorrow.
Here is how to drill a tub:
Items Needed: 2 30ish qt totes or 1 66qt tote As close to a 2" drill bit as you can find (I use a 1 7/8" craftsman spade bit. $2 at walmart) Drill Ruler Sharpie
Measure 4 inches up from the bottom of the tub, this is for "fill" line, which is the depth of your substrate.

Now, measure half an inch above that - the bottom of the holes should be right around this point.
If using a spade bit put the bit about 3 inches in if using a 30ish qt or 4.5 inches in if using a 66qt. Spin the bit and pay attention to where it is going to go - mark the center when you know the bit will turn and just hit above the 1/2" mark from your fill line. (your holes should not be directly level, below or more than an inch above your substrate, the closer you get to that half inch mark the better)
Mark the center and repeat this till both long sides have a spot of where to drill.
On your other ends measure about 8 inches up and ensure the drill bit will not hit any handles or clasps for you totes.

When done your tote should look like below!

Ok, here is a picture of my jars today.

All but 2 are at 100%, so today I am going to pasteurize my substrate using the oven roaster tek. For those who do not want to purchase an oven roaster please follow Franks tek which is linked below. The biggest difference between the 2 is the heat source - outside of that my tek is just an adaptation of his. Also included in the roaster tek is the ratios I use to make my substrate.

I did these yesterday in 2 batches. Started at 12pm pulled my last bags out at 830pm.

This is approximately 36qts of substrate I did in that 8.5 hours (remember as opposed to the stove top teks I didnt have to sit around all day watching it. I played some games, ran some errands, etc.) I have another 8 qts that I am about to pop in right now!

Looking good, have to look into a roaster...
One tip I wanted to add is when I drill my monotubs I put duct tape on either side that I am about to drill. I found without it has the tendency to shatter a little and can ruin a tub. Doing this and then drilling fast without putting too much pressure makes a clean circular hole each time

I'll have to give this a try sometime. I've ruined a few tubs by cracking the side. I just try to go as straight down as possible. But this tip is pretty nifty!

I hear heating the plastic with a hair dryer before drilling helps too. I just always draw my holes and cut them with a red hot knife on the back porch. I use a propane torch to heat the knife. There are tons of ways to do it. Drill bit, heated soup can, hot knife, soldering iron, etc etc. You just got to find what works best for you

Pretty much this, as long as it's round. Just take your time to do it right, this is going to hold your pride and joy, not some watermelon you heated up in the microwave to drill a love hole into.

Hey, I'm about to pasteurize in bags for the first time. I read your tek with the roaster on page 20 or something, but then I thought you would need a filter patch or something on your ziplock bags?
I thought it was needed for the heat to distribute or something? Btw, I don't have a roaster, so I'm using a pot if that matters..

You don't need a filter patch. If you aren't using a roaster then use franks tek that tbag linked to

well, he's using jars with foil on. at least last time i checked. Also thought I remembered some older tek that pasteurized in bags, bluehelix maybe/maybe wrong I think that's where I got the whole filterpatch idea.
But if they're not needed, that'd be best!
edit: I see he's added bags to the tek, and explains why filterpatches might be good if you're using poo or something besides coir/verm.
Thanks psilly!
