Report: Colorado now a major exporter of illegal marijuana
DENVER — The amount of illegal marijuana from Colorado and seized elsewhere quadrupled in the past few years, according to a report by a network of law enforcement organizations.
The report found that in 2012, there were 274 seizures where the marijuana was destined for other states. In 2005, the number was 54.
The most common destinations for the marijuana were Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Texas.
The size of the seizures also increased. From 2005 to 2008, the total average number of pounds seized was 2,220. From 2009 to 2012, it increased to 3,937.
Most of the marijuana came from Denver, Boulder and El Paso counties, the report found.
The report also found an increased number of people trying to mail marijuana through the U.S. Postal Service. In 2010, the Postal Service seized 15 packages with marijuana headed out of state. In 2012, they seized 158.
The report was written by the Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, a network of law enforcement organizations in four western states that share information on drug-running patterns.
The report is preliminary and comes from data gathered by the Department of Justice’s El Paso Intelligence Center. The center relies on law enforcement agencies to voluntarily report seizure information.
In addition to the marijuana seizure statistics, the report includes data on adult and teen use of marijuana, emergency room visits and fatal crashes related to marijuana. The report found increased levels in all these groups.
The report does not cover 2013, the year in which small amounts of marijuana became legal for adult consumption in Colorado. In 2000, Colorado legalized marijuana for medicinal use.
Advocates for marijuana legalization have long argued that legalizing pot would actually decrease black market diversion by creating a regulated industry.

as long as money is to be made, they are gonna do what they can. A nationwide legalization would only eliminate the problem between states, they would instead sell outside the states. Would it be more or less? who knows

Better than getting supplied by Mexican cartels. All the nations around Netherlands get their weed there I don't see any difference. If you make it legal in one place and illegal everywhere around that place smuggling will be a big industry. Anyway I bet California exports way more to other states.

I think we can let out a collective "no shit" to this article. Man, I should find a "reporter" job, I could write better fluff than this.

The politicians want there to be a market flooded with cheap brick weed so they can keep seizing money at the border, and any shitty brick that slips by doesn't matter because it's bunk. Long live domestic grass.

Let's imagine US national prohibtion of marijuana has ceased.
"Colorado now a major exporter of marijuana."
So, if we delete the word "iillegal" as an adjective to describe the marijuana, how could this be bad? Let's try a few other substitutions. "Colorado now a major exporter of craft beers." "Colorado now a major exporter of tobacco." "Colorado now a major exporter of tomatoes."
I sincerely doubt the media would take any exception to the last 3 headlines. If the neighboring municipalaties did not continue to exploit outmoded prohibitionist laws for the criminalization of substances to exploit asset forfeiture, Colorado would not be making any illegal exports. Interestingly, the exports are illegal in the context of Colorado's neighbors' laws, but not by Colorado law. Not CO's problem.

Great news everyone! Colorado's cannabis prices have fallen so much over the last few years that it has become economic common sense for people living in other states to get their buds from Colorado.
Also news: the amount of money and time spent on stopping shipments of cannabis across Colorado's border has increased in the last few years resulting in more seizures.
Also news of omissions: this report tells us how many seizures of this kind happened in 2012 and 2005, but we have no idea how many in the years between!
Also news: Everyone is biased!

I know we've been getting it here in Texas. They may be getting it cheap but we're paying full price. The way to fix this problem is just legalize it world wide.

So Colorado legalized marijuana (to a certain extent), but you can buy in that state, then cross into other states with the drugs without crossing any border patrol or anything, right?
So, in actuality, it's like opening Mexico's borders and expecting cocaine to not get through into the USA as far as I can see.
Of course, if you make something available in one place, but don't contain it to that place, it'll spread.
