this fungus resembles chanterelles in habitat and appearance, it is thick, large, dense, vibrant red-orange, has no gills or even intersecting veins but more like ripples that suggest veins, simmilar to horn of plenty. often appears as a red-orange crest rising from beneith pine needles. see it all the time, NEVER been able to find reference to it. feels rough to the touch. can be as big as your head, very common, somebody should at least know what im talking about if not the name

As with any mushrooms, some photos would be great (we wanna see 'em too).
Here's a couple wild guesses.
How about Phaeolus schweinitzii?
Or maybe Gomphus floccosus?
Happy mushrooming!

Gomphus floccosusis the closest thing ive found too. structurally its the same, but the veins are far less prominant, te coloar is far more red-orange, and the entire mushroom is rough as frozen velvet and hard as polypore

FOUND IT! its not a mushroom at all, its a symbiotic parisitic infection that mutates the fruitbodies of russulas and milk caps creating a hybrid fruit body its called Hypomyces lactifluorum, or lobster fungus,
the mystery is solved

For whatever reason that one didn't occur to me.
Those are edible, and many people consider them choice.

I bought a dried ounce of wild lobster mushrooms at the grocery store. They smell a lot like pussy.

Yep, that?d be the lobster Never tried them myself, I only find them when I visit northern Minnesota, and the ones I find are rarely in edible condition. Always wanted to try them though, they look interesting. I?m sure after all that research it took to solve your mystery you read the info stressing the importance of identifying the host of the lobster mushroom before consuming. If memory serves correctly they can sometimes parasitize poisonous species of russla and Lactarius, from what others here have posted, identifying the host can be near impossible sometimes, in which case it?d be best to leave the lobsters in the ground. Again, I?m sure I?m preaching to the choir, I know you know your shit mitch, just wanted to to post in case anyone else wasn?t aware.
Heres a pic of a Minnesotan Lobster mushroom from last fall.

I usually see them dried.

I've seen the same comment from several respected mycologists (Alexander Smith is one). However, there are no records of poisonings by Lobster Mushrooms that I can find. They are a popular edible species. From that, I conclude that either they never parasitize anything poisonous or, if they do, they somehow render it nonpoisonous.

They don't taste like it, though.

I thought I remembered you stating that before Toxicman, but I wasn't sure and I definitely didn't want to give out potentially dangerous info.

Better safe than sorry. Most warnings by Alexander Smith I pay close attention to. This is one that I think he was wrong about (and there's damn few of those).

i think it would be interesting to find/create a d-base of credible reports by competent mycologists of cases where the parasitized species was able to be determined. difficult i'm sure, but i'm sure the data is out there.
