How can I check to make Sure my pressure cooker works?

I just found a 6 qt. pressure cooker at Goodwill for $10, and i have 2 days to be able to take it back. I'm trying to find out if its going to work properly. I'm mainly concerned with sealing. I put about an inch deep of water in and started cooking it by itself. after a short little while, steam would come out of a few different spots, like near the plastic handle, and this weird little circular thing. The type it is is a rocker. It would start rocking but only intermittantly (sp?). If I can get it to rock at all is it functional, or should I really be able to get a steady slow rock, on the lowest heat level my stove has? Any help will be much appreciated.

As long as it rocks your fine..
You should be able to turn on the stove to high until it starts to rock.. then turn it down to low-med and have it spit up a little bit of steam and then stay quiet until more steam builds up and makes the rocker move again..
read up on Pressure Cooker instructions online.... take the time to learn how your model works..... very important!!!!

Thanks Poop. I figured it was working fine, I was just concerned with steam escaping from openings other than the main one the rocker sits on. If I had to choose between having my stove at a more medium heat to keep the rocker at least moving periodically, or putting it on low, and not having the rocker move much, the higher temp. would probably be better right?

small leaks are normal as the steam builds up.. but they should stop after a bit ie: seal themselves up...
Use only as much heat as you have to to get that rocker to move a few times a minute.. no more no less...
a simple test is to take a drop of water and let it fall on the lid.. if it evaps right away you are at full temp.. if it stays on the lid or runs off you don't have 15 psi!!
