It may be too late to help this casing, but in the future, you might try adding some diatomaceous earth to your casings. About three to five percent by volume should do it.
DE is the fossilized skeletons of siliceous marine and fresh water organisms, particularly diatoms and other algae. These skeletons are made of hydrated amorphous silica or opal. The particles are actually very tiny, sharp shards so small that the material feels like talcum powder. This is easily picked up by the hairy bodies of most insects and worms where it scratches through their body causing a rapid loss of moisture; they just dry up and die.
DE is harmless to humans, though I'd avoid breathing it, and is frequently added to grain on farms to protect it from insects. You can get it at any well-stocked aquarium store; it's used to filter water.

i had these as well. i found a few solutions on the internet, try a little bowl of whisky in the tank. worked for me

damn...i wonder what it would feel like if i were a gnat who came in contact with diatomaceous earth...probly feel like i got shoved into a room filled with barbed wire, broken glass, razor blades, and boards with nails stickin out of them...then i'd just bleed to death...what a way to go...

You're anthropomorphizing a bit. The nervous system of insects is far less sophisticated than yours, and while they may feel some pain, I doubt it's anything like what you describe.

The flies you have are either sciarid, phorid or cecid flies. These can be controlled biologically by using their natural enemy, the predatory mite Hypoaspis miles.

I've noticed more flies around this year aswell.. though not as bad as chaosgenerator seems to be experiencing. Hardly ever used to have them but this year there always seems to be a few running around on each tub. It must be a good year for the UK fly population or something..
