Working out a spore printing idea, thoughts?
    #1862551 - 08/29/03 01:56 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Ok, here is my basic theoretical plan:

Take a standard 8oz yogurt cup with TWO lids. Take one lid and drill/burn a 3/16 to 1/4in hole in it (cleaning up the edges) and tape over the hole with good clear tape. Set aside.

Take the second lide and glue a section of filter patch over a hole for ventilation then glue a pin or wire bent into an L shape to the lid so that a cap stuck on the L will be held 1/4in or so off the bottom of the cup.

Sterilize cup and lids, put the cap on the L wire lid, close cup and let sit for 12-24 hours. In a glove box remove the L lid and cap and replace with the storage lid. Store in a suitable place. To use pierce the tape with a sterile needle and blast the spores into solution with a jet of sterile water.

Thats the basic concept. One idea I just came up with now is to put a filter patch on the storage lid to help it stay dry inside.

I'm interested in this information to try and make some stable spore prints that will be good for at least six months to a year yet be easy to use. Please do not use this information or these ideas for the growning of illegal species.

you could put the water in the yogurt container and swish it around, then suck it into a syringe! maybe someone should make a tek!

Yeah... just drop a cap in a 1/2 pint jar for a day or two. Take it out, cap it, and viola! Add water later to make solution. That's how I've always done it.

Well I'd done prints in a glass jar before myself and had some mixed success... I guess what I'm really looking for is a good method of long-ish term storage with ease of access at the end, when I was to use the spores.
FYI, I always blasted the spores with a good stream from the syringe, it seemed to get more of them off and mixed up well with the water.

I'm thinking that keeping the cap above the print (no touching at all) won't hurt when it comes to keeping things sterile and the yogurt cups are cheap and easy to work with....and it keeps them out of the waste stream for a bit.
What about the idea of giving them access to air, via a hold and filter in the "storage" lid? This would help keep them dry and in stasis I think, but does it have a down side?

And can anyone point me towards a tek the deals with long term storage? I'm building an Ark you see....
